Why do you "home record" ?

I can do it at any time. I enjoy doing things spur of the moment. When things are planned I feel pressure that hampers creativity. And I love the fact if I got a musical idea, it could be uploaded to the internet for the world to hear in minutes.

However pressure also has me perform at a higher level. So one side effect of home recording is sloppiness (in my case).

I've also been told I'm not very easy to work with, so there's that too. :)

I like the technical side of assembling and maintaing an all analog studio at my house. Then being able to record right there alone or with the band is just too fun~
I dont use my studio for anyone else, never wanted to turn it into anything remotely like a business.

I can go in there and just get lost doing whatever, technical or creative.

I would have to pretty much take jigfresh's reason. :)

I think I would be happy if I had access to a professional studio, as there are much more toys that I can play with. But, honestly, the studio wouldn't really improve my sound that much more, anyway. The sound I go for doesn't really demand perfection as well.

I play. My wife plays. Most of who it turns out I hang with play.
We want to make music
I love the sounds
I love doing this

Laying on the floor listening to The Blue Danube through a little Standel bass amp once apparently may have ..been partly formative' :)

I am addicted to music.....totally and completely....I have a fairly high pressure day job so my home studio fixes me....I can just be in there and "be"......I don't need to have a plan......something always just happens naturally.....some of it sounds impressive and some of it sounds like poo but the process is still a magical journey in search of sound........Oh yeah...my wife of 35 years totally supports it!!! That helps!!

What are your reasons for recording at home ? Would you rather have access to a 'professional' studio ?

I can't NOT do it. It's become kind of my therapy.

Way better therapy than a magnifying glass and ants like I used to do. :)

:D

I started recording at home because I had songs to record in some form or other & had neither the money nor the chops to do that in a studio.
It became a hobby.
As life changed and work became more stressful it became a stress release hobby.
After I started visiting HR.com I found I could get help, and sometimes collaborators, to improve my recordings and the stress release hobby became a little more outcome oriented.
In the end I use my llittle set up to record songs and to escape from other things for a little while.
Some outcomes are achieved, many aren't but as it's my time & my space it's also my set of goal posts and if I miss it's OK to try again later.

Oh, my wife not only supports it, she buys me gear for birthdays & Xmas.

Not to trying to brag or anything....but I took the route of building "as pro" a studio as I could at home....and being realistic, appart from having the spectacular room(s) and high-tech design that pro studios would have....I think for the most part, I now feel I have a fairly "pro" studio at home....so I don't need to go out. :)

Nobody else will put up with my bullshit long enough to get anything done. (Not a joke)

I've worked in a real studio once upon a time and have recorded in one many times. I just like recording period. Now that it's in my home I can indulge myself anytime of the day or night.

Would you rather have access to a 'professional' studio ?

Yes. Yes I would. And a union orchestra, maybe a professional singer... Or two, yeah two. A man and a woman. Some musicians who can really play would be nice.... Someone to transcribe my most nebulous ideas to sheet music.. an engineer, a producer,... And oh yeah, for free too. They'd hafta do it for free. That cool?

And a couple fans would be cool too. Specially if they were hot chicks.

My environment tends to influence my ideas. Whether it's the sunlight coming in the windows (or lack of), or my neighbors with the chainsaw... or these new $30 led strips I bought. Or just being able to eat cereal at 4 am and spontaneously decide to record myself playing guitar or humming a melody into a mic. We all know how awesome it is when an idea just hits you, and we all know how terrible it is when you can't hit that idea back.

And my environment is also my own so my recordings have that going for them (good or bad as that may be ).

I would love to get paid to work in a pro studio, either on staff or freelance. Nobody I work with has any budget to speak of though, and I'm perfectly capable and willing to do my own stuff with my own gear in my own space on my own time.

Absolutely not.

For me, recording is part of the composing and orchestrating process. I want the freedom to experiment, to record and record until I get it where I want it, and to be able to say, "Screw this," and start from scratch.

My recordings aren't professional quality, nor do they need to be for what I do. They are, however, more than good enough. :)

How do you hold the cereal bowl while you play...and do you hum with your mouth full or in-between gulps???

:)
