I want to send some Cool Edit files to somebody who uses Sonar. He needs 24-bit files. How do I convert?

If I use Save As for each track and click on Options, it gives me some options. The two that look the most likely are '24-bit packed int (type 1, 24-bit)' and '24-bit packed int (type 1, 20-bit)'. There's a third one called '32-bit 24.0 float (type 1, 24-bit) non-standard', but it doesn't sound very promising.

Any ideas?

No clue offhand. You may want to save a small file of each type, send them to him, and ask him which ones work correctly with sonar.

Poor Toki, lol

dobro, I think you just bring each of the files into edit mode, and under Edit (convert sample type)....you'll have to go to 16bit if there's not a 24bit option.

Pisses me off, really...b/c sonar should just truncate the last 8 bits off of your file...but if you send him 16bit files, they'll work with sonar. I don't think it's that huge a deal as long as there's not a lot of manipulation done to the tracks in their 16bit format.

BTW - I'd be more specific, but I don't have CEP loaded onto this computer yet...can't freaking wait!!!

oh, be sure to ask him what sample rate he's working with too...if they're different, go ahead and convert that at the same time...in the same step.

Hi dorbro - I have to do that all the time since I use CEP 2.1 and Sonar3 side by side sometimes...

'24-bit packed int (type 1, 24-bit)'

that's the one I use to get CEP 32bit files into Sonar. ;)

PS I probably have the dither box checked too - I forget !

Also - I guess you could tell him about this free VST plug from Voxengo:

http://voxengo.com/r8brain/

Reviews I've read indicate it's resampling is very accurate and you can also do bit depth conversion - if he has Sonar3 then he already has a VST adapter.

Then he could convert 32 bit float files on his side, I've used it for that - there's no reason why a Sonar user shouldn't have 32 bit wav capability...maybe in Sonar4 hehe

Sweet...now what the hell does that mean, and where is it? lol.

hehe - looks like the quote didn't show up on your side chris...

'24-bit packed int (type 1, 24-bit)'

that's the save as selection to make.

This sounds like too much work you guys..

I would make a new folder for the sonar guy, then navigate to the Cool Edit folder for the song, and then select all of the wave files needed, then do a batch conversion on all of 'em at once, and have the converted files saved to the sonar guy's folder, that would beat the hell outta doin' them one at a time, hell, you could even go watch tv or something for a little while while CEP does all the work... :D
