Who uses the Yamaha MT4X and would understand if I am doing something wrong?

I got a Yamaha Multitrack Cassette Recorder MT4X. I am wondering if it is working. If anyone understands its operation, could you verify that I understood the manual properly for the simply task of recording on Tracks 1, 2, 3, or 4. I am succeeding in recording on Track 1 but not Track 2. According to the manual, if I record on Track 1 I must push the Assign 1-2 button down and turn my Pan hard left (what if I don't?). To record on Track 2 I push the Assign 1-2 button down and turn my Pan hard right. My Tape/Mic button is OUT if I want to record. The only thing I must do (other than hit the Record and Play buttons) is hit the Rec Select buttons for Track 1 or 2 depending on which I want to record on. Does that sound right to you? To play back it shouldn't matter what my Master buttons are doing (they too require assigning, still not sure when I tackle those). It also shouldn't matter whether I select the Group, Stereo or Cue Monitor Select buttons - at least, not when it comes to only hearing Track 1 and not Track 2. Obviously to reach each track I am plugging my source directly into the Input 1 or 2 in the back for the right channel. But when I record track 1 I see the volume fluttering in the Track 1 LED column, but not in Track 2 when I record on Track 2 (even though I do see it fluttering in the Stereo columns). I am puzzled and frustrated. I am wondering whether I bought a model that does not work. What say you?

First of all ... you don't need to plug into CH 1 to record on TRK 1. You can leave the plug in CH 1, press the 1-2 assign switch, pan right, and push the record select 2 button to record on TRK 2.

When you're playing back, you can either monitor via the cue or the main buss. But you need to push the mic/line/tape button down to the tape position to hear the track if you're using the main buss. What position are these buttons on CH 1 and 2 when you're playing back?

If you're going to monitor with the cue section, then you do need to read up on how to do that in the manual and make sure you're setting the master buttons correctly.
