I recorded this band this weekend (pretty good band) and I decided to put the mix up for review. None of the mic's that were used for this recording were more than $200. The guitars were ran through a jcm2000 head (not sure of the cab model number), miked with a sm57 and akg c2000 b. The drums were miked with gls audio es-57 on the toms, sm57 on snare top, c2000 b on bottom, beta 52 on kick, and Oktava MC012's as spaced overheads. Bass was DIed. Vocals recorded on mxl 2003. All mics ran through the pre's on my io|26. I used Cubase SX 3 and the only plugin I used that is not included with Cubase was the Izotope Ozone 3 and Waves Tune for vocal "cher" or "T-Pain" effect.

Computer specs:
Centrino Duo 2.66ghz, 1333 fsb, 2gb of ram.

Anyways, tell me what you think.

OH's are a little harsh in this mix, but I have fixed it since then.

Doesn't sound bad. Big thing I'd adjust is the pitch correction on the vocals. It's extremely apparent and has the Cher effect like crazy.

the band wanted the effect. sorry forgot to mention that. its pretty popular in a lot of todays music from r&b to rock. they wanted kind of a signature "t-pain" effect.

thanks for the listen?

Uh... bad sounding pitch correction is a strange effect to want. But I guess to each their own.

Recording sounds pretty good. I agree the pitch correction sounds silly, but if they like it ... so be it!

On a side note ... gosh I'm getting sick of this emo-type stuff.

The drummer needs a metronome.:o:D

Sound quality is pretty good. The vocal effect RUINS the song. If they wany that, so be it, buts its messing up an otherwise nice recording. Overall its very good.:)

Sound quality is good. The pitch correction effect is just terrible. I'm not sure why anybody would like that. The drummer definitely needs to practice his/her timing.

I agree with all of you. Drummer practices with a metronome and he has improved a great deal but he needs to improve a great deal more. He needs to learn to stay in the pocket. Thanks everyone for the listen. Unfortunately, the cher effect has to say because in the end, it's what the client wants and the entire band liked it :(

I'd spend some of my own time & correct, on a clone vocal track obviously, the corrections for the 1st minute so they can hear how much better it sounds.

Tell them you'll leave it in but also be honest and tell them, in your professional opinion, it ruins everything, and to at least try a normal take so they can hear how it sounds.

No purpose in trying to be "original" (even though I guess it's popular?) if it just sounds like shit.

Reminds me of a quote from fresturhuch (sp?), "Just because no one understands you, doesn't mean you're an artist". :p

I think you did a good job though. :)

Yeah thats the Cher Vocoder vocal sound Im trying to replicate.
Theres some pretty dodgy bits where the Vocal tuner plug in doesn't hit the right notes, I think you said it would take some moving of individual notes though so yeah hopefully I can reproduce something like this.

Nice mix,
Eck

well i really apreciate everyones comments on here. thanks for the input and taking to time to listen.

The mix sounds good to me. Theres something about the snare that doesn't sound right to me. Kinda like it's not fitting right in the space. Overall I like your drum sound though. It has the brightness that I expect from that kind of music.

If I hear "dance little girl like nobodys watching" one more time...

Hey, man - I think it sounds really good. An Excellent job you've done. Who needs expensive equipment, indeed, lol....

On a side note, I have bands/singers/whatever that want that T-Pain/Cher sound on purpose pretty often. Usually emo/screamo bands, rappers, R&B singers....It's just the cooooooolessssst thing in the world to sound like a robot....apparently. Just gotta give em whatever stupid little shit they want, get your money and move on, right? I'd probably tell them it sounds silly and they're gonna regret it in the future when their kids ask them why they sound like a Furby, but whatever.:p
