Who owns their own studio??

I'm expecting to open a recording/media studio possibly as early as the beginning of next year to service mainly christian bands and school functions.

Has anyone here opened their own studio and would you mind sharing a little insight as to possibly how well it went at first, what sorts of things did you do to drum up business?

I'd appreciate any input you'd have. Thanks!

Cross-posting is discouraged. Most people here browse multiple forums. At any rate, I operate a small studio out of my home but mainly based on referalls of past clients. I'd say a good track record and maybe some modest advertising to start. Most bands have friends in bands or are in other bands so you can get a client list developed fairly quickly if you do a good job and fill a necessary niche. Also being involved in the local music community you're targeting will help.

I have operated a home based demo (or project) studio for several years.

At 1st it was mainly for my stuff and a few friends - this led to some referrals (which is a significant way most studios get work). For a while I hoped that I could eventually move to a dedicated facility and have the studio become my "main gig".

Then everyone and his brother started to buy the newest "studio in a box" (including many of my clients) and I'm now down to a few singer songwriters that simply don't want to deal with the engineer side of things. My hopes for a stand alone facility are nothing more than a distant dream. Thankfully, I was not foolish enough to give up my day job.

That all being said - it is a tough business with lots of competition. Plan to start small and make real sure that you can provide quality recording (a bad rep travels much faster than a good rep). If you are looking for mainly Christian clients, contact local churchs that have musical worship services. There are marketing firms that focus on the flyers that you see in churches (which advertise local busineses) find out who that marketing firm is and find out how much a small ad in a select few churches may cost.

If you sing or play an instrument, join a church band which may allow you to network with more Christian musiciians. Make sure you have business cards that you can hand out. Maybe offer to record a church band for little or no money to get your foot in the door.

Like I said, it's a tough business to be successful in so look for every opportunity.

One last thing, be very selective about gear purchases - I've seen too many studios go under becuase they continuously bought (often financed) the newest greatest pre-amp, mic, etc. etc. It does not take much to cause your "outgo" to exceed your "income"

No need to post the same thing in more than one forum...........

As a note, your website doesn't appear to work very well at all in Firefox... unless it's just not done, seeing as you haven't opened yet.

From a personal standpoint, I don't really see how much business you expect when only allowing yourself to work with such specific requirements.
