I'm looking at the Dm-24 as a possible front end to my computer system or the alesis hd-24. how do you all like the converters? are they tip-top? how are the preamps on this guy? anyone with any info or personal experience, please share. If you could compare the quality to another preamp or converter that would be great. Thanks.

Well, I was supposed to have one today, but ran into some trouble with not being allowed to use a check to buy everything I was getting. Money in the account, but the authorization company thought my spending pattern was too out of whack. so I'll be returning to get it and the rest of my gear tomorrow after stopping at the bank and pulling out the cash for the purchase. I'll give a report in a day or two when I've had a chance to get it all set up.

can't wait to hear what you have to say. i'm actually surprised not that many people have responded to my post. when was the release date?

It's been out for a month or maybe a bit more I think. The place I bought mine from said that this was the first one they have sold. I just don't think too many people have them yet. There has been relatively little discussion of them on all the forums I frequent. I think that tascam has gotten a bit of a bad rap over the last couple years with lowering quality in their components in general. At least that is the impression I've gotten from my reading so far. I'm banking on this unit being built a bit better than say the TMD-1000. I'm also hoping they provide better continuing support for it than their other recent units.

On the Hunt

I may buy one as well to hook to the Mackie HDR

Digital from HDR to the Tascam. I also am concerned about support.

Thoughts on this config.

I was considering getting the same setup, but decided to go with a PC equiped with a motu 2408mkII. From what I understand you should be able to use the dm-24 with the HDR without any problems. I think that the only thing you won't be able to do is arm tracks from the mixer. Of course you'll need either TDIF cards for the HDR or ADAT cards for both the mixer and HDR.

I think the HDR and DM-24 should be a good mix. You'll be able to utilize the features of the DM-24 very well. That's the only thing I'm not so sure about with my setup: will I'll even end up using half the stuff this board can do. I'll be using Logic Audio (at least at first) and I'm afraid I'll end up using the software more than the mixer or that the mixer won't integrate as well as I had hoped.

Got the DM24 Tonight (Is Clock an absolute)

Will hook up tommorrow. No manual included except on CD. This is going to be a lot of fun as I am an EE and enjoy techy toys.

Let ya know how it sounds soon though it will be a while before I work my way through this board.

Going Optical lightpipe between the HDR and DM-24 and then to an HHB 850 CDR. I hope this works.

I was wandering about the digital signals syncing up. I did not buy the coax SMTPE cables yet as I ran out of time at the store because I have to tell them everything.

I have only been to one store where they know anything it is too far to drive regularly.

Any diving in............

With lightpipe/ADAT connections I don't think there is a need for wordclock syncing. I'm interested to hear how the MMC from the board does at controlling the HDR, or will you be running transport on the HDR directly?

I've had the DM-24 now for a few days. I've finally got a somewhat stable setup on my temporary computer (still waiting for all the parts for the new one to show up). I've gotten a pretty godo feel for the board and I've begun getting into some of it's more interesting capabilities. I'm finding that my choice for software is possibly lacking, though. I chose Logic Audio. The idea was that it was the one program out there that could slave to MMC. I assumed that the software could be setup to allow fader movements on the board to control the virtual fader position and movements. So far, however, I've only been able to get fader motion on the board to effect the currently selected track in LA, no matter what fader I move on the board. I'm hoping it is a setup problem on the LA side.

Otherwise I'm fairly happy with the setup. The Pres and A/D's on the board sound very good. Internal processing doesn't add any noise that I can hear at moderate listening levels. Of course, most of my use has been to test that everything is functional rather than a discerning listening test.

So at this point the only change I can see making, possibly, is getting Sonar or Cubase. The MMC slaving in Logic is not so great (again, it might be a setup issue, or possibly a bad combination between this board and that software) so that isn't as vital as I originally thought.

hmm... seems I spoke too soon. :(

Dm-24 died today. Got a blank screen when I fired it up. Tried resets and everything else, no dice. Called up teck support and they said that it is a known problem and that the solution is to reseat the EEPROMs inside the thing. They are sending an email to me with directions. I'm hoping this is the problem and the solution. I was really liking this board up until it stopped working. I'd hate to have to exchange it, especially since it'd take a week or more to get the new unit.

Please post

Can you post the instructions for reset in case I run into it or email to tnt1mail@netscape.net.

I am in the mode of getting fired up about the board. It is really nice. I hope it keeps running.

Entering diagnostics mode on the DM-24:

While powered down press and hold 2ndF, Eq High, and Lib- buttons. Continue holding down while powering up. Screen will say "Diagnostics Mode" (or something like that) at the top then popup a dialog which asks you to press enter. Release the buttons, press enter. There will now be a menu. Usual reset procedure is to select Init SRAM (not the one that says "Init SRAM for factory test", the one that just says "Init SRAM") and also Flash Memory Clear. You might try just initing SRAM first as I think that clearing flash memory will wipe any library entries and whatnot that you have saved. Once done selecting items select exit, the unit will reboot itself.

May the heavens smile upon you and your DM-24 so that you never have the need to do this. :)

I think my problem is just a fluke. Bad Karma or something. Reseating the EPROMs like they suggested didn't fix it. Now they are sending me a new set of EPROMs. If that doesn't fix it they will either do an exchange with me or I can take it back to the place I got it and they will do the exchange.

We just purchased a DM-24 about 18hrs ago. I've been playing with the board since we purchased it.

I LOVE IT!!!

I hope I don't run into the same problem pvolcko has run into. :( (I hope your board gets better pvolcko :) ).

heeh... thanks. The board is still pretty much dead. Sometimes it will boot up correctly, but most of the time it boots up blank. I've been in contact with Jace over at Tascam and he's working with me and some other people there to get things taken care of. Will probably end up getting a new board shipped out here and get a shipping tag to have UPS pick up the dead one. They haven't seen this problem before and want to get their hands on it directly instead of going through normal return/exchange channels.

For anyone concerned about support from Tascam, do not worry. they have been increadibly helpful during all of this. While efforts so far haven't fixed the problem, they have been very responsive and have gone out of their way to remedy this. And from what I've been reading online this is a pretty limited occurrence (problems with the board).
