Herbi-Whore
there isnt any section on monitors as such, so here goes...

Im looking at some nice little monitors to replace my 25$ future shop comp speakers, for recording purposes only. I have my eye on a set of M audio sp5b monitors, cause theyre relatively inexpensive.

The question is, are they active or passive? (I couldnt really tell looking at the site, maybe Im blind). In any case am I going to need to buy a power amp to go with?

Once again thanks in advance for answering whats probably a nooblius question if ever

monitor questions are usually handled in the other equipment and reviews section but pretty much anything is fair game in newbies.

yes, they are powered (active - 75 watts) and no, they are not recommended by the vast majority of the users here. not to say they're bad, but I for one have not heard ringing endorsements.

from zzounds:

The SP-5B is a 2-way bi-amped bookshelf speaker with 75W of power.

many people here would suggest looking at Event's PS-6's (a little over $500) or Yorkville's YSM1p's (a little under $450) as better budget monitors.

I got some of the M-Audio SPB8s when they were being unloaded for $300 by Musicians Friend. Very good little speakers. Tight with very good bass response. I'll be the new version of these is very good also.
