Not sure if I should have posted this in other equip/reviews, but since I am a newbe, figured I would try here first. Also, as I am a blind user, please forgive the succinctness of this post and any typos. My screen software doesn't let me review in these edit boxes.

I am a drummer in a blues band as well as a small jazz combo and am looking for a good mixer. From what I have read in this forum (and other) I think I am settled on a Yamaha MG 16 but not sure if should go for the effects ready MG16/6 or keep it simple for the MG 16/4. The intended use is both for recording and live performances. Typical recordings would be done live with no multiple tracking, at least for now. Not sure if the effects would be something to apply during the recording process or added later. Any help appreciated.

What's the difference in price, and what does the 16/6 have that the 14 doesn't?

I ended up choosing the 16/6fx. The price difference seemed pretty negligible compared to the differences--mainly, the extra busses. Most people will tell you not to give to much consideration to the effects included onboard with any mixer, and I would definitely say that the effects in the 16/6 aren't much to write home about. They're not bad, they're not great. But they are easy to slap into your mix, or to just use as a low-maintenance experiment on various tracks. I do use the extra eq quite a bit, though. I have that set up with the typical "smiley face" eq. I always shut it off during mixdown through my monitors, and when I'm done I can give the song a listen with the eq turned on to get a general idea of what it'll sound like when played "through a real stereo".

Hey thanks. That's what I wanted to know. Did not think the effects by themselves warranted the extra bucks but wasn't sure about the extra two busses and the EQ.

FX in a mixer can be REALLY handy in a live setting with a half-decent engineer. I would probably get the bigger one to allow myself to grow into it. :)

For that price difference, you made the right choice. The extra EQ and effects definitely make it worth the higher price.

Enjoy!

I vote for 16/6 too

I use the 16/6, mostly for live stage show. The efx are not bad for vox if you dont have an outboard exf.
