I dont know whether google websites or geocities allow you to make a music website.

If you know any free websites that allow this then please tell me!

Thanks

edit: a website which you can build up from scratch!

Full disclosure: I'm a stakeholder in this, so it's a bit of a conflict of interest.

Bombplates.com does websites specificially for bands. They're designed to be visually appealing, easy for musicians to use, and powerful. The goal with a Bombplates site is that it serves as the hub for all your band's online marketing. It can send show and news updates to most of your other websites including Facebook and MySpace without you having to visit each site individually for each update. And of course, there's an audio player built in.

The downside is that it's not free. We charge $20 a month for hosting and maintenance plus a setup fee to purchase your design. Though if you PM me, I can get you a coupon code to waive most of the initial fee. (Alternatively, we're revamping the store, and getting rid of the setup fee in a few weeks. After which, any new user can actually try the whole system for a month or two free.)

As for free systems, there's the ever-popular myspace as shortedaman said. There's also Soundclick, but that's not as customizable.

Geocities is actually defunct these days, so no go there. :(

Guess I'm gonna add the atom.bombplates.com subdomain right now! :D

I guess i will have to wait a few weeks . . I jumped over to bombplates . . . saw $299 on the sample sites . . yikez!

Honestly, I don't see why myspace and facebook aren't "good enough" . . . but even better . . .why not do your own .com with Godaddy and use various websites for your pages? you can let myspace "host" your music and link into the player from your .com
let facebook host your blog, etc. . .

Yup. That reaction is why we're changing it. Too much of a barrier to entry!

Kluging together something from the various services out there can get the job done, but it's a lot of work. You have to have someone in the band with an eye for design, the technical skills to implement said design on two or three platforms, and the time to do so.
If you've got that guy... can I borrow him? :D

Bombplates seems ok at best.

If you're going to do a template that a bunch of other artists have you might as well do myspace. At least you'll get more traffic on your myspace.

The pricing is actually pretty brutal.. for a pre-made template that you only get to basically upload songs, pictures and text at $240 per year (for the basic package) is not a very good deal at all.

The cms is okay... over all if you don't have a budget just get a myspace if you do want to spend a bit on something solid get a custom site.

Why don't you just go to GoDaddy and buy a domain name and get web hosting? That can be really cheap. That's what I did and it's around $60/yr which is probably triple what you have to pay (mine's more because it's based in China).

I got a website program called Freeway for something like $50 and I have somewhere around 150 pages on my site. You just drop mp3's or WAV's right on the pages, or jpg's or whatever, it's very, very easy. There's tons of room for songs in the most basic GoDaddy package.

I've got lots of music on it and I have tons of space left.

The reason I didn't go with putting my stuff on someone else's site was because I wanted to have 100% control and 100% confidence that someone wasn't going to mess with it, like pull all the music one day and I'd lose everything. For how little it costs just do it yourself, screw MySpace and all that... just my opinion mind you. :)

Really? last time I had a GoDaddy, they charged me something like $140 a year for hosting and domain registration.

Weird... I also manage an artist friend's site and his is about $70 a year. You probably can hunt and find someplace that would be $10 a year or free is my gut reaction, but I don't want to go with some bullshit operation that's going to screw me somehow so I figure... safety in numbers, use GoDaddy.

If you go on their site, they advertise domain names for $6.99 with free hosting. I haven't researched the limitations of that.

Yup. Those are all very valid concerns that we do address or plan to address. We've discussed giving people the ability to buy a template exclusively so that no new users would be able to buy it after that.

Plus we do custom sites on the platform too. We don't advertise that we do it yet, but if you have your own designer, we can work with them to build your site with their design.

Obviously, if you have the time and skill to do it, building your own site is a better option. It's cheaper, and you get more control. The problem is you have to have all that time and skill. :D

That aside, Eeb, you mentioned just being able to "upload songs, pictures, and text." Is there some significant functionality that you think we're missing? Let me know, so I can build it in!

DintyMoore: Do the free hosted sites on GoDaddy have some advertising on them? I've seen some webhosts who do that.
Actually, if you're going to DIY it, I wouldn't recommend GoDaddy anyway. Their web interface isn't very good. I haven't heard good things about their reliability for larger sites. Most places I've seen consistently rank at least half a dozen places better. (Actually a good place to look for hosting is HostMonk.)

Alright! We have finished the transition.

The $300 initial cost is gone. Plus, if you enter the coupon code HomeRecording, we'll give you an extra month to try it free!
