I'd like to know which way some of you record?

I've just bought an adat and its PCR board.
I'm going to plug my soundcraft mixer to the adat and then mix with cubase VST.

I record 24-Bit Optical +18 out the Motif into the C-Port Daughter board..... 24 Bit in Mastered in Ozone Izotope, Dithered in Sound Forge to 16, to Disc....

Most of what I record is done direct from the synth thru a combination preamp/A-D converter into the digital in (S/PDIF) of my soundcard. (My vote) Then to CDR after editing.

When multi-tracking bands I use a small analog board via direct-outs into the analog ins of my soundcard. Overdubs/punch-ins likewise. I mix in SW and render to two tracks in SW and go from there to CDR.

When doing acoustic gigs where I'm just gonna use a stereo pair
of mics to get the whole thing, I go thru the same combo pre/converter gizmo into an external CDR via AES/EBU. From there to the PC via S/PDIF and back to CDR after any editing.

Tracking to HD24, or sometimes to a DAW using Cubase SX (via the converters on the HD24)........

Still also have ADAT XT20s but they're mostly backup/archive units.

Mixing is analog out from the HD24.........

Analog goes into Tascam DM-24. I adjust dynamics, EQ etc. (if needed) before it goes through the Motu 2408 mk3 to the PC. In Cubase SX I make the mix. The DM-24 controlls the faders, mutes, jog-wheel, rec.buttuns, and sends it via midi to cubase. The mixdown can be totaly on the PC or via the DM-24 to another digital source.
Notice the signals never leave the digital domain at anny time, there's no conversion until it has to be burned to audio-cd.

There's no conversion there either -- the digital data is stored on the CD.... it gets converted back to analog by the D/A converters in people's CD players.

Extually there IS a conversion. When you want to make an audio-cd playable on every home cd player the format must be 44.1kHz/16bit. I always record on 48kHz/24bits so there is a conversion. And you have to be verry carefull when you do this. If you do it wrong the quallity won't be the same as the original. I mean you have to choose which type of dithering you are going to use. If you don't dither the extra 8 bits will be thrown away.
