Which type of panning is the best?

It all depends on what desired stereo effect you're trying to obtain.
You can hard pan a rhythm git and apply some slap-back to hit the other side. Or you can pan 2 tracks opposite each other in the 9/3:00 position to get some fullness.

It's all a matter of how you want your mix to sound. There is REALLY no golden rule.
 
Here's a circular pan. It makes a really cool sound when you whack it against GamezBond's head. :D :D :D
