Hi guys! I'm trying to pick out the right type of microphone for a project I'm working on and I want to get the same vocal quality and sound as incomplete by backstreet boy. I really like the tone of the vocals and would love to have a microphone that could produce the same tone and quality as the vocals in that song. Any advice or help pointing me in the right direction as to which type of microphone is used in that song would be grateful. Here is the link to the youtube video: YouTube - Backstreet Boys - Incomplete

So how are you going to be recording with the microphone that you choose?

There are a couple of things to keep in mind.

The microphone is just one factor in the many that end up resulting in a particular sound. The Backstreet Boys record in studios that purpose built, contain high-end equipment, and are operated by experienced engineers. Think of it this way . . . your question is a bit like asking what tyres you can put on your car to make it go as fast as a Ferrari.

Even if you get this all right, the vocal quality of Backstreet Boys' recordings comes from, surprisingly, the vocal qualities of their voices. Unless your voice has similar qualities, you will still have difficulty achieving the same sound.

I figured the video would have had a shot of the mic in it. Instead I watched a Backstreet Boys video for nothing. Argh. Try a Google search and see what you can find.

But don't think that all you'll need to do is get that mic and you'll sound like the BS Boys. It's a lot more than that. Most important is the singer in front of the mic. If you're not the BS Boys you won't sound like the BS Boys. Then there is mic placement, mic preamp, the room, getting the right performance, etc.

Ask Dan Muckala if he remembers.

Honest -- Using the same mic is going to have as much to do with the quality as if you guys prefer the same brand of hummus. Fantastic vocal recordings are made every day with Shure SM58's and horrible recordings are made every day through Sony C800's.

thanks for the input guys. let me be more specific though. i want a microphone with some presence and little less low end. im currently using a samson c01 condenser mic, and can't seem to get the sound i want out of it. would i need to get a dynamic microphone? i want something that has an in your face sound with crisp mid and high end. i rendered the little bit i have of the project here http://www.4shared.com/embed/595445282/af99fa7d Thanks again!
