Hi,

I want to buy a new digital multitracker, and I want to choose between the Tascam DP-01FX, Boss br-900cd and the Fostex mr8, does anyone have any experience with these machines and can give me some usefull advice?

Thanks,

Robert

I would go for Boss

Hi Robert,

I'm biased here, as I own a Boss 1600CD. But I would go for Boss in your situation. It has pitch correction, built in drum machine, bass simulation, COSM-effects and a CD drive for mastering and burn down without the need for PC-connection.

As far as I can see, it's bonus features when you compares with Tascam DP-01 or Fostex MR8.

Or try to find a music store that stocks all three of them and try out their demo versions. An important aspect is also how the design and layout of knobs and buttons suits you, when you're working with the machine. To me a drawback of the Boss design is that they put the mostly used buttons in the left hand bottom corner. But hey, it's only me who is right handed.

Tascam has been making shit product for the past few years or so. Fostex makes quality products but the model you speak of is a toy, a quality toy but a toy nonetheless. Bosss/Roland has a solid reputation though I've heard that thier customer rservice is nonexistent. I would probably take a closer look at the BOSS.

As a VS2480CD owner, I would have to go with the Boss. As a matter of fact, I looked at those ones your talking about for a writing box. The Boss wins hands down. I was lookin at the BR900CD

vs2480
Once youv'e had one everything else is shite!!!

Actually that sounds a bit harsh it's just that with the 2480 those things that you question after owning something for a couple of months, like track count and amount of fx, it just doesnt hapen!!!

Get an Akai or a Yamaha. Otherwise you will wish you did later.

Br900cd

I've got a BR900CD, I got it on write-ups and talking to dealers (i.e. not seen or tried until it arrived here). Previously I'd looked at specs of both the Tascam FX (which I nearly got earlier) and the Fostex you mention. Personally I'm knocked out with what I can do with the BOSS ... I play blues lead and rhythm guitar, harmonica, keyboards, bass ... and can hit drum keys roughly in time with all that! Even my horrible vocals are enhanced somewhat!!! This lot together sounds like a band ... so I'm a happy guy. Can't tell you about comparisons because this is the first decent multi-tracker I've owned. If you think I vcan answer anything specific please ask.

I've got a boss br-1600cd. I was looking at the 900, but I got the 1600 really cheap at GC on sale. I think it has too many features for what I need, but for what I do record, it sounds fantastic.

I have a Yamaha MD4, and upgraded to the Boss BR1600CD. I absolutely love it! I own a few Boss products and have not been disappointed yet. The BR1600 has some very nice guitar effects and simulators. I am a big fan of miking up amps for a good guitar sound, but so far I have managed to capture some beautiful tones just plugging the guitar straight into the Boss. So far I have not come across anything that is worth mentioning in a negative way about the Boss BR1600. Taking time out to read the manual and constantly refering to the manual keeps me constantly finding features on this multi-tracker. I highly recommend it!
