Which sound card?

Lost,

My suggestion about the MOTU 24 i/o was in response to your question about sending all your channels directly to the PC, by which I interpreted that you wanted to route them "live" to the PC. Sorry for the confusion. The MOTU unit could actually take the place of the HD24 if you trust your PC to remain stable during recording of large quantities of tracks. I don't have any personal experience with lots of tracks directly to a PC, but I still haven't read about anyone who does it and is truly happy with their performance. That's why I have focused on the HD24 or the Mackie units (which I wound up getting) for our application.

The lightpipe question: All ADAT recorders have a digital format for transferring audio from one unit to another which uses a fiber optic cable, hence the name "lightpipe". The ADAT lightpipe digital format has become kind of an industry standard, so there are numerous devices out there that offer inputs and outputs via lightpipe. This allows the format to stay in the digital realm instead of going through digital to analog translation, then out to another device that will have to convert the analog back to digital.

For your purposes, though, I don't think you need to mess with it for now. Go back to your premise that you want to record from the direct outs of your mixer (at least I assume you're using the direct outs; you could also use the inserts to get a signal that is pre-fader but has other complications) to the HD24. Once your recording is complete, pull the hard drive caddy out and hook up to the Alesis Fireport to transfer the data files directly to your PC hard drive. Then you should be able to pull all the files into Sonar and mix away.

By the way, just out of curiousity, where abouts are you in Minnesota? I have an old friend who is pastor of a church somewhere up there but I can't remember exactly where. It would be a major coincedence if Henry Williams was at your church.

Anyway, best of luck.

I just re-read your last thread and realized I may have answered the wrong question about the lightpipe.

You asked about what was needed to hook up the Fireport. The Fireport from Alesis is specifically designed to allow download of the HD24 drives to a computer via a relatively new interface nicknamed "firewire" but which is also identified as an IEEE 1394 interface. Most newer computers have a firewire port, but it would be worth checking out on the motherboard you are getting. If it doesn't have one you can add a PCI card for pretty small change. The firewire is faster than USB or ethernet, but not quite as fast as a direct IDE controller attachment.

Hope this helps.
