Hello...

Im new here and generally quite new in Home Recording in general

I just bought a new imac switching from pc cause i found it to be unreliable,..:spank:
Currently i own a mbox 2 sound card which i bought from 2006...still works great..

Is this compatible with imac? I will be using Cubase Studio 5 as well...

If not...which good sound card or audio interface would you guys recommend? Budget up to 500 - 600 Euro...

Thanks in advance for your time:D

mbox 2 is compatible with imac. i can't see why it wouldn't be compatible with cubase also.
plug it in and try it :)

Read some rumours online that people had problems using mbox and imac together...especially the last generation of imac i7 etc etc...

Will have to test it and let you know...

But if this doesnt work...and i may need a sound card...which one would you recommend?

Thanks for your answer

advice is gona depend on what your recording, ie.how many simultaneous ins and outs etc..

see how the mbox goes and post back if your in diffs.

Best of luck.

Get one of the new Mbox's, Ive got the new pro, sounds great, built solid, a few options for expansion. . . but not too much expansion.

Even though I got it cause I wanted to go PT, I would still buy it reguardless

if you've got the cash go with the MOTU Octopre, great for the money and it'll work with most anything, including ProTools 9 :)

*motu 8pre.

octopre is focusrite.

Does any one else find it super confusing how many things are called octo***...eugh.pet hate of mine :)

Haha, you're right... geez, and I own the MOTU. Yeah, they do put "octo" on just about everything. Either way, the MOTU unit is fantastic ;)

Hi...i tested it...and it of course it dosnt work...

It dosnt even light up...!! I installed Po tools 6.8.1 ...and connected the mbox via usb on the IMAC .....nothing....how can i fix this? Anyone bumped into this before?

Although im on Windows 7, PT8 and using firewire. take a look at all the connections first (you have no idea how much time Ive spent trying to sort out problems resulting from a bad connection) Is there a place in mac os where you can see the hardware connections? If so, take a look there and see if the mbox is showing up, if it is then the problem is most likely with the drivers. I had this problem when I had to wipe my computer for a fresh install. (I doubt this will apply to mac) But I did some recommended optimizations for W7, one of them involvedme changing the drivers for my fiewire/usb bus, This stopped my mbox from working, I think because the Mbox had been routed elsewhere. If you have done anything Like this then reinstall the Mbox drivers and it will be sorted. The other problem Ihad was for some reason PT didnt install the hardware drivers upon install, This could be a possibility. To solve this either reinstall Pro Tools or go on the Avid website and download the latest drivers (so long as they are supported by your version.

What generation Mbox are you using?

Hope it helps :)

Hi...thanks for your reply

i am using the mbox 2 which i bought in 2006...dont have a clue what generation it is..:D

It came with pro tools le 6.8.1

Usually mac shows an icon on the top right corner when you externally connect something to it.... i didnt get anything with mbox... so i guess it could be pro tools..

Someone said that on intel macs you need pro tools 7.1 and up to make the mbox work...

Maybe i should find the latest pro tools and install that...who knows! :(

Mbox pro 3 if you haven't bought one yet, or one of the other mbox 3 series they have great converters & preamps.

What will you be recording? For $500 or less, here are some options...
If its just vocals and individual instruments then go with a stereo or mono interface with superior pre-amps and A/D converters such as the Apogee Duet or One. Apogee interfaces are Mac only and offer excellent compatibility with Core Audio based software. I use a Duet and it sounds phenomenal.
If you need more inputs for recording drums or live sessions then go with a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 or Presonus Firestudio Project interface. These interfaces have slightly lower quality pres and A/D converters than the Apogee's, but they have two to four times the inputs.

P.S.- The Mbox3 Pro is nice, but it might not be enough to record drums since it only has four mic pres. It does have four TRS inputs as well, but using these would require you to buy corresponding pre-amps.
