I smell home cookin!
Here are two short tracks. They are different recordings of the same tune but with different singers. I am interested in knowing what you think of the two vocal performances--style, technique, anything. I don't care about production, but feel free to make any comments you like. One was recent, the other is older.

[Sorry; the link failed. This one should work:  ]

Thanks Ocner. I think I fixed it.

If not the tracks are under "Jack Dog" on Soundclick.

I liked B better. Seems to be more dynamic. Don't know if that is what you want. I liked it.

I didn't really care for either of them. They both have pretty weak voices but I think that "B" was a little stronger.

Well I thought the tone of the first singer was better but the performance could of been better. (pitch, emotion)
I thought the second had a better performance but I just didn't like his voice quite as much.
So, I voted for both. :)

The singing in B is better. The A take sounded weak and searching for intonation. The B singer knew where he was going, his pronunciation was better and he nailed the notes.

The B track has so much reverb and sillibance that I can barely hear it straight. Its hard for me to say because of that. Its like a really lo quality mp3 or something. Im sorry, I know that is production related, but I have a hard time hearing thru it. I would guess that B is more familiar with the song, or even the writer of the song, though.

H2H

They are both pretty awful. Out of both I actually like A better since B is really flat.

neither sounds better than the other to me. the B mix is very harsh though.

i like the A regardless of the mix. Yeah, B sings stronger than A but I heard B sings out of tune in some point. I like A, its smooth and warm.

I thought A is the better singer, but was buried in the mix, which makes him sound weak. B was pitchy, and his diction sucked.-Richie

I thought A's style matched the music a little better. B had some pitch problems.

A has a better tone in my opinion but sounds totally inexperienced... like if you took your friend and said sing for this song. He could learn and probably sound really decent but right now he doesn't. Either way I think he's better than the other guy.

I was expecting hick redneck hillbilly type stuff. That was some cool music, man.

I liked A's style much better.

Liked A, but think the piano intro of B would be better for the A intro. As stated, there was excessive sibilance in B and really hard to get the true feel of what the vocal track really was, but initially I like the vibe of A vocal track. Vocals almost reminded me of a toned-down Jon Anderson.

Track A is the 'lead singer' of my present band from a recording we made recently. Track B is me (the writer) from the original demo from 15 years ago. (hissy analog 4-track, with excessive reverb.)

I was just wondering if we've improved on the original or not. How I wish Bono was in our band! :D

My gut feeling is that the 'A' singer is having trouble with that old devil passion, and getting the "feel" of the tune. I have all kinds of passion, since I wrote it, but you can see I'm not the best with pitch. I've improved some since then, and actually took lessons, but my range isn't high enough to do it justice anyway.

Thanks again everyone for your opinions. Very helpful!

Hick stuff, huh? LOL!!!!
I thought you were describing Jimistone! :D

BBBBBBBBBB
Go with B
I think I know what you are going for. while the A voice is more typical and familiar to this genre, I think that B will deffinitely help you to mold a distinctive identity. B had more texture and personality without being over the top or outshining the music.
A I would dismiss as just another The Sea and Cake/mogwai/Belle and Sebastion esque band but I would give B a hard listen.
