I have an audigy 2 soundcard and I want to record vocals/acoustic guitar into my computer.I was thinking of buying an SM58 but will my cards preamp be good enough or will I need a seperate one.Is the SM58 a good all rounder or would I be better off buying another mic to record guitar?

P.s great site

Thanx in advance

I hope chess doesn't see this!
(quietly, almost a whisper) edit this message to say lol at the end and then do a search on " my first microphone"

rickybiggs99,

If your on a tight budget and the mic is going to be used for recording acoustic guitar, I recommend the Marshall MXL603S. If the mic is going to be used for recording electric guitar amps I recommend you try a Sennheiser MD421... or the Shure SM57 can work too.

If it is good enough for you, then it is good enough. Personally, I wouldn't use either the Audigy or the SM58. That said, I started with a Soundblaster Live, a Behringer mixer, an SM57, and a cheap stereo for mixing. Of course, I up-graded all of these items (one at a time) as fast as I could.

can the marshall mic be used without phantom power? because the audigy presumably doesn't supply it? I'm not familiar with the 603s, but unless it can be battery-powered than it is unsuitable.
