I have just got a MIA soundcard, but before I install it, I am trying to figure out the best way to use it with the limited hardware I have.
Up to now, I have been using a couple of mics plugged into a small mixer--a Peavey RQ200. The mixer has been plugged into the line in of my SB PCI 128. I recorded into a multitrack audio programme, mixed down the tracks within the programme, and saved it as a .wav file to be burned on to a cd.
I also have a little Zoom RFX 300 effects unit plugged into the mixer send socket. I have been using it mainly to add effects as I record each track. I am told that this is probably not the best way to use it since it is better to record the tracks dry and add effects later. So sometimes I don't use the effects unit and instead add software effects after all the tracks have been mixed down within the programme to a single .wav file. I do not have a DAT recorder or any midi equipment. I record exclusively acoustic folk music through mics.
The MIA offers 8 virtual outputs and an onboard DSP mixer which means it is possible to mix the tracks down via the MIA to the two physical outputs of the soundcard, bypassing the need to use the programme to mix down. My plan at the moment is to connect the two physical outputs to another channel (channel 6) of my mixer and from there back to another track in the audio programme. I have tried doing this using my old SB PCI 128 and it seemed to work OK except that I have not succeeded in getting the effects unit to add effects as yet.
Is there a better way of doing things?
