I have been mixing live since the dawn of time, but I have never tried multi-trac recording. I have a Mackie 1604VLZ and I work with some quartets. I was wondering which recorder would be a good starter. I want something that I would not have to update immediatly, but someyhing easy to learn on. I understand most of the basics, but just haven't dove in yet. I also like things rack mounted, because I would be doing a lot of live recording and moving stuff just seems easier that way. I was thinking maybe 8 tracks, does anyone have any advice for me. Thanks

How much do you want to spend? Is computer recording an option for you?

Of course I dont want to spend any more than I have to to get started, but I also dont want to have to update immediatly. I spoke with a friend from full compass who said Mackie SDR would be a good unit for what I described. I want to be able to make some live recordings, gospel quartets 6-8 tracs, and I also want to start a small studio in my basement. I already have a Mackie 1604 and a small PA, SM 58s, EV Mains, Yamaha Keys, Yamaha Bass. I have a laptop, but I,m not sure how it fits into the scenerio. I'm just trying to learn before I begin making mistakes. My goal is compact, moveable, quality

The Mackie or any of the Roland, Alesis recorders will work fine. I think the Alesis 24track unit is much cheaper than the others which makes me a little suspicious but it looks like a great deal.

I think there is one issue with the Mackies where only the HDR will let you render the tracks to be put on a computer easily. I could be mistaken but those are the little details you would want to figure out if they are important to you or not. Other issues may be WordClock input, quality of DACs, software interfaces, hardware remotes, video monitor output, etc.

Figure out how upgradeable of a solution you want and go from there. If you just want a bare bones recorder than the Alesis looks like a good deal. I believe Track Rat on these forums uses one.
