Okay Im a rap guy. I have a great digital setup. I want to master all of my songs in digital, but I want that analog feel. So all I need to do is record my finished songs to reel to reel, so only one track is needed. What is a good recorder to do this with? You're help is appreciated.

yeah, but you need two tracks...that's what senn was getting at...you can still buy two track reel to reels from otari and tascam but they're a few grand each...i wouldn't mess around with reel to reel because all that's involved in maintenance and upkeep can be pretty time consuming...you could try a really nice cassette deck but people tend to think of cassettes as amateurish of even a hi fi vcr can warm things up a bit...take your stereo tracks to a studio and see if they'll run it into a deck and burn from that...you could maybe get a dat or something...plenty of options...
if you're gonna get into reel to reel there's a lot of things to learn as far as biasing, alignment, azimuth, cleaning and so much more...i'm on the tail of a 2" 24 track studer and just reading up on stuff i may be in way over my head...peace

wow ana......analo.....how do you say it?...anulog..what the hell is that???.....lol...sorry .....resume.

C'mon Jamal, I know you can say it. Remember "Hooked on Phonics" that they don't teach in schools anymore?

A-n-a-l-o-g, like Ann-a and then just say "log" like a fallen tree trunk. I know you can do it. You'll be teachin' that 'lil baby to talk before too long. You may as well teach the right stuff the first time around.

Analog. What a lot of people would like their recordings to sound like.:D :D :D

Jagermeister Forever!:D Prosit!

Doesn't anybody like the craft of recording anymore? I have an Otari 2" 24 track, a TASCAM 1" 16 track, and a TASCAM 1/2" 2 track. Biasing and azimuth should only be done once. Cleaning is something every machine, including digital, needs (much easier with a reel-to-reel. How hard is it to use a couple cotton swabs and 99% pure rubbing alcohol?) I check my alignment every month or so with minimal tweaking. Throw on a test tone tape, look at your meters, and adjust level--boom, you're done. If the machine is fairly new there is little maintenance that has to be done. My Otari is 20 years old and there are few things I had to replace the last 10 years and those things replaced were either done by an Otari service electrician or me. I think digital gear is more costly and less service friendly than an analog machine.

I've used ADAT and Hard-disc based recording and found more downtime when problems arose than I did with any analog set up.

Plus if you're going to mix down to digital while trying to warm up tone you need to spend a couple grand (at least) on decent A/D and D/A converters. I did some number crunching with a friend of mine that wanted to figure out the cost difference between digital and analog and they came to be about the same in the long run.

Sure digital gives you great tools in editing and I'm not opposed to the medium but if I were to go that route someday I'd still like to have an analog reel-to-reel for mixdown. A hybrid of the two is something I'd consider.

There, that's my rant.

Ain't it the truth.

Hey Sennheiser, pass the Jagermeister please.:D

Michael, into what program do you mix to make a MP3? Or how do YOU go about it?
Do you use a stereo 1/2 track anywhere in the scenario?
thanks

I'm using MusicMatch Jukebox. It's the easiest to use that I've found so far. And I don't have to convert from a .wav file. It automatically records to MP3. I only use it to upload to NWR.

No 1/2" half-track yet. Might be awhile for that since I don't plan on mastering just yet. I need to improve my mixing skills before that happens. Tracking is fine, mixing still needs some work.

The TASCAM CD-RW700 will be coming soon to mix to CD.

What is "a great digital setup"?

What exactly is "analog (analogue) feel"?

And for the life of me I can't imagine that what you are proposing will make any significant improvement to "rap"
