Which part of your signal chain can you not part with?

If you had to give something up, which of your gear would be the last thing you would ever let go?
I am not talking about instruments, just the equipment you use to get your sound recorded after that?

EDIT: just for some clarification, if you were doing a recording session, which peace of gear would make you cancel if you coudn't use it?

Hmmm, let me see, could it be one of my cheap chinese made mics or maybe my dmp-3? Or how about my prosumer soundcard with its creamy sounding converters? :p

Nah, nothing's expendable in a budget setup like mine.
 
I coudn"t give up my HD24. This thing is sweet.
 
I second the computer, my DAW set-up is the primary source of recording and editing.
 
Lack of gear that I have, anything taken away could criple me. But The thing I couldn't have taken away is my MR-8.
 
Nothing in my studio could not go away without me being able to do a recording. Thats the advantage of being a gear slut:D

If I had to pick one thing I would not want to record without, it would probably be my console... or maybe my Dyanaudio's.... oooh, or maybe one of my preamps.... or one of the nice mics.... who knows?

I guess the one thing that I maybe I could not live without is my Playstation 2. Nothing gets residual band members and their guests out of your hair as well as a Playstation:D

my fingers, I know I'm spoiled, but I just can't part with them. Seriously though I don't hing I could do very well without my monitors==> reference and CRTs.
 
Boss CS-3--->Ibanez Tube Screamer--->Digi RP200--->Audigy (16-bit).

I need all these, and could part with none of them because of the tone
that I want. (i.e. MacAlpine/Lynch/BMG type tone)
These things don't exactly get that tone, but you work with what
you have sometimes.

Just starting out in the PC recording area, so don't have much in the way
of gear after taking several years off from even playing music.

Side note:

I've always had the perception that most of the older players think a
signal chain, or effects, or even an amp, are weaknesses.

Truth is, I've heard great players on acoustic guitars, turn around and
sound sloppy when amplified. Amps...ELECTRICITY...actually will bring
out any weaknesses someone has in their playing.

It's always funny to watch some chicken picker get plugged in and
proceed to self-destruct.

Anyway....I'll finish this semi-novel and just say hello....my first post here.
 
dude...I'm "feelin'" it but my personal experiences have been a little different.

Acoustic training will NO DOUBT will improve your playing but my feeling is that "plugged in" gives a kind of sustinuto pedal effect and hides some of the fingering problems. This probobly more-so when playing a lickety split fast passage. With that, I find that my over-driven amp with pedals in front help be schlogg through a song I'm not "as comfortable" with...especially during a solo. Can you feel the "wall of sound" in your face yet? Power chord and mixolydian scales in your brain!

I'm thinkin that this is where technique might fade and style fills in. Practice, practice practice....not the best thing but...it can happen.

Oh...signal chain thingy....I l love my mesa (wish i lived far away from civilization), Ibanez tube screamer, Digitec whammy pedal and of course my big red hose (audio cable)...the other one is blue...oh yea...and my patch panel.

I relied heavily on my stomp boxes when I first started out. That was before they invented the all-in-one processors. It can hide some of the slop. My dad made me put them all away and practice clean when he realized I was serious about it. He's a monster player, gigged in many bands since the 50's. He overdrives his amp a little bit, but no effects other than reverb on his signal...

I wouldn't get much done if I weren't there...

Everything I have at this point, IMO needs to be replaced/upgraded at some future point in time... some things further in the future than others...
