Which one of my mics should i use for bass guitar?

I have a friend coming over and i need to recoard his bass guitar. He'll be bringing his bass guitar and bass amp, and i'll be recording it into my computer with either a Shure beta 52 (kick mic), shure sm58, or apex 410 condensor mic (good multipurpose condensor mic).

Which one of those mics would you recomend using, or a combination of all of them? Shure up close with the metal pop screen taken off, and condensor about 6 feet away for a stereo recording?
or just the sm58?

would the beta 52 work well for that or is it JUST for kick drums and congas and that kind of stuff?

any tips for mic placement?

i really need some of your expertise and advice. thanks.
 
oh and by the way. ive heard going DI is best.
but i have no DI box..(whatever that is)

i have an art studio MP, and a mackie 1202vlz mixing board.
can i run direct into those?

I would use the beta 52... but the condenser might sound good try both. But if i was going to mic an amp i would usually a DI signal also and mix them together.

... uhh no im fairly sure the tube mp doesnt have a DI, (haha i used to have one... I have a horribe memory). you can get a cheap DI for like $20... not the best you can get but it will be fine.
A Di will split the signal out of your bass, one can go to the amp, and one will go into a pre amp - like your tube mp or you mackie... whatever.
 
It does have a direct in. run the xlr out to the input of the recorder and run the sm52 from the cabnet. use either track or mix them to taste.
 
Yes you can go DI with the ART Tube MP, and it'll sound pretty decent too.

Apparantly his Bass Amp has a DI.
would it be best to use his bass amp DI
or my art studio mp DI? Or would it work going DI from his bass amp, to the studio mp, then to the computer, or would that be a waste of time?

Im thinking maybe test out the beta 52 and the condensor , see which sounds best, then record with the best sounding mic, and with a DI signal, and blend em together like you guys suggested..

No, the "DI" signal from his amp will be line level and not suitable for the input of the ART.

Just try them both individually and see which sounds better!
