i posted a tread here about a week ago on is the akg c1000b good for drum overheads and about 90% of all the posts that i got told me that they are not good mics. so, i thought about the studio projects c1. i posted and tread about it and got some good reviews on it. and then some people tell me to get the c1000b!!!!!!!!!!!!! i don't know what to do!

HELP!

Zeke- this is an easy one. In this case the AKG was built for an overhead, and didn't do it that well, and C1 is a versatile vocal mic that's so good, it's a better overhead than C1000. IMHO, there are some cheap small diaphragm mics that can do a better job for overheads, but I just love my C3. There are so many things you can record with it. Also, you get to buy it from a nice American who will answer your email, rather than an Austrian who probably won't. If you're Austrian, no offence meant, but that's the only reason you'd want to buy a C1000. Don't do it!- Buy an SM7 or some 012's/603's. Hell, a pair of SM57's would be a more useful purchase than a C1000.-Richie

Zeke, what mikes do you currently own ?

I think small diaphrams are a good "safe" choice.

Oktava MC-012
AT 4041, 3031
Marshall 603
Rode NT3

Another option is a pair of AT 4033 medium diaphrams. Good for percussion, vocals, acoustic guitars, guitar cabinets, handles high SPL's, bass rolloff. $600 for a pair (new) If you don't own a good vocal mic yet this might be a wise investment. AT 4033 are workhorses and I haven't found anything they won't record well.

A pair of Marshall 603's is a cheap way to get two wide cardoid small diaphrams.

The SP C1 works great as a single overhead on a drum kit.

ozraves- when you use a single overhead, do you pan it in the center or record it to two channels and pan left and right ?

You record to one channel.

You pan it where it fits. It's somewhere around the center. I'd keep it within 10-15 percent right or left. There will be a sense of space even though you've got one large condensor and one channel.

i'v heard about the 603s. are they any good? it's hard to think about the 603s because there so cheap. so it's down to the 603 and the c1.

right?

The 603's are great overheads. I would take them over the c1000's. Both would do well for OH's.

You don't have to think about it. That's the beauty. The 603s are so much better AND cheaper, it's a no-brainer.

I should have clarified: the 603s are better than the C1000s. The C1, assuming you mean Studio Projects, is a large diaphragm and a different animal.
