I have $400 to spend on a pair of mics for overhead drum use. The rooms I record in are all fairly small, no high ceilings either. What is recommend now a days in this price range?

I do a ton of indie/hardcore music. Any help?

I have the Rode NT5's and the Oktava MK-012's and i like both however latley ive been using the Oktavas more...... just something to think about. These are the only two i can compliment on cause they are the only ones ive used ;)

CAD M179 - Big sound, pretty neutral response for an LDC, continuously variable patterns so you can dial in as much "room" as you want, equally at home as overheads, or on just about any other part of the kit (toms, outside the kick drum, room mic, etc.).

I'm also hearing a lot of positives about the Audio Technica ATM450, but I haven't personally used them.

Other potential candidates: Oktava MC012, Studio Projects C4, Rode NT5

love my nt5s, especially as front-of-kit instead of overheads. they blow away just about anything else in their price range.

Thanks for the suggestions. I guess what it comes to do is what sound I am looking for and I'm not that picky. I love the vibe of older indie or punk records (which I am sure is a sin here) so I guess that's what I want.

Those ATM450's really caught my attention.

I also have an Oktava MK-219 that was modded, and I thought about getting another one to make a pair. Anyone use these as overheads? It would be about $300 for the mod and and the mic, and when I've used the single Oktava as an overhead mic, I got alright results. I think I could do better.

NT5's are great as overheads. They are my vote. I use them all the time in a x/y config and they really get the job done.

I've been using matched pairs of the Oktava 012's for overheads and room micing. They've been great for me.

Check out the Episode 3 recording at theLiveCast.com for the room micing sound.

You can get them at IndependentAudioSales.com. << shameless self-promotion

They are really good mics on the cheap though.

Prices are getting ready to increase (mid-April) damned exchange rates.

Se-3!!

I think they run for $250 ea. but you can probably find it for under $400 somewhere...It does it's job.

I got my Crown CM700s for $400 a pair. I don't have much to compare them with, but here they are on the drum overheads:

They should great on acoustic guitars too.
