Hi guys, my first post here. Definitely more to come!

I have two mixes of the same song. I would really love to know which one sounds better/is on the right track. Your thoughts would really be appreciated!

For some context: The first song is the mix that our producer came up with. However, our bassist was convinced that he could do a better job, particularly with the drums and bass. He also wanted to re-record the bass (since someone else did the bass in the first mix). So the second song is our bassist's initial mix. He plans to make more tweaks.

Here's the original mix:

And here's the mix of our bassist. A bit more work needs to be done here, but the idea is there.

Even though our bassist's mix isn't done yet, I think you're already able to tell the direction he's going (particularly with the sound of the drums and bass). What are your thoughts?

Thanks!

Okay, the 2nd mix definitely sounds more alive in every way. The bass is better. The highs are more crisp. It is louder, but I compensated by lowering the level of the second song.

Anyway, I like the 2nd much more. The only thing I like more about the first is the snare. I REALLY like the snare in the first. It's incredibly unique and I think the ringing is great, as it sounded like the bassist tried to EQ out that ring a bit. I think it should stay in; it goes away in the louder parts, which is good!

the bassists mix is def better. the first mix sounds lifeless and lacks any real lows or highs. kinda like I'm listening through a phone.

The 2nd mix does sound more lively & more dynamic. I'm not a fan of the 1st mix snare. The bass level is better in the 2nd mix too.
Hey, producers aren't mixers usually.
