I am a casual musician (Guitar/Keyboards) and want to have some fun but don't want to scour manuals to do so (although with time I probably will ) and not spend too much. I have hunted around and I think there are 3 I multitrackers that fit the bill (all can be bought for $250-$300 new and all are available regularly on ebay!). :
-Fostex MR 8 MK ll
-Zoom MRS 8
-Tascam DP 01
I'm leaning toward the Tascam because of the EQ built in.
Anyone with experience with these who could offer an opinion would be greatly appreciated.

Question:Do you have a computer?
Fairly good soundcard?

There is a excellent multitrack software called "Reaper"
It's free and fully functional to download for a "open" trial.
Cost only 45 bucks to keep(non-commercial Licisence)

I would suggest for a newbie to start at once into the digital world of music.

But if ya relly gotta have analog ,I persnonally would lean towards the Tascam(I'v had three different one's and they are work hourse's)
Let me know whatca got and we all will help you get up and running.

I do have a laptop that's got a pretty good soundcard.
I'd consider a software program.
I'll search for "Reaper" and check it out, although a stand alone unit would probably work better for me. I'd need to buy an interface anyway, wouldn't I?

Yes,You would need an interface.
I use a POD myself and LOVE it.
Check out the REaper download or cruise around the forum first.
There is lots andv lots of help there.

THE all-in-one boxes have been designed from the ground up for that purpose so they take care of noise and hdd noise, some are all solid state - flash mem, is the laptop quiet? mine has a fan that is noisy, as far as easy, the boxes are easy. i hate software and hate computers and hate mousing around and monitors scream into my single coil guitar p/u's.

I would look at the Tascam US-122 for your laptop. Its a small interface that will probably suit your needs and you can record any amount of tracks you wont be held back by 8 or 16 tracks. This is the smarter way to go if you are seriously looking at getting into recording.
