I think it would be interesting and informative to find out which multitrack software people think is best and why?

Which is best in the $100 and less range?

Which is best in the $200 - 400 range?

Which is best regardless of cost?

If that is the case. You will need to figure out your financial budget.

You will need to let us know what you are trying to accomplish with the equipment.

Then you'll need to figure out which program is best suited for you.

There are demo versions of most of the major programs.

I'm not looking at purchasing any at the moment. I though a thread comparing the available options would provide some good information to anyone looking at mullitrack software ( I'm also curious as to what you're using and why). I've seen several posts asking which program should I get. The usual responses are get x-brand because it rocks, but doesn't include much information as to why it's better than y-brand. It would also be good to hear about the limitations or problems associated with a product and/or why you upgraded from one to another.

Cakewalk Home Studio 2002

-has the Sonar UI (way better than N-track)
-DXi plugins
-ACID Loops support

Which is best in the $200 - 400 range?

Dunno, but I would proably go with Sonar since I have been pleased with Cakewalk Products over the last 5 years.

I don't know what's best,...

but I just know what I like and what I use.

I use DAW software sparingly, but for less than $100, I like MAGIX Music Studio v6. The standard version should be less than $40, which is 24-tracks, and the deluxe version should be less than $80, and is 48 tracks. It has features & functions similar to the other DAW titles in it's price range, including handling audio, midi, sequencing, and being able to port directly into MAGIX Music Video Maker software, [purchased separately].

Like I said, I only know what I use, and that's not great for comparitive purposes, but for my money, it's MAGIX. I'm pretty well set in the <$100 category, and my recommendation is "Music Studio 6", which is found at Best Buy, Fry's and similar stores.

BTW, MAGIX has a v-high end DAW title called "Samplitude", which I believe runs 24 bit, and is well above $100, but is based on the same format, or operating environment, that you'll find in the "MAGIX Music Studio" titles.

THE BEST, i'd have to Say Nuendo or Logic 5. but in a few weeks it'll be Cubase SX

If you don't need to do MIDI sequencing and want a nice, simple, and straightforward UI, Sonic Foundry's Vegas is worth looking into.

$100 and less: N-tracks or Quartz.
$200-$400: CEP 2.0. I like Vegas as well, but it doesn't have an editor, so there's another $299 I'd have to spend on CEP.

Nuendo and Samplitude are my personal faves, but those are more than $400.

Like my Samplitude, though MIDI is weak but they are working on it. I actualy went through the agony of downloading and installing trial versions of probably all the differen software out there.

The fact that samplitude had 90 day, full features trial wasn't the least desiding factor.

Anyway I agree with SPINSTERWUN you have to look at what your needs are first.

cheers

this is going to turn into a huge thread about who uses what.
your best bet is going to the music store and trying them out in person or download demo versions of the software.

i personally use SONARxl. home studio 2002 is the version if you dont want to spend that much money for sonar. i have been using cakewalk products for a long time and am comfortable with them. i think it is whatever you get comfortable using, what you are going to record and how many trax do you plan on recording.

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/spacedye.htm
youll find a sample of what ive done with cakewalk products there.
good louck!!!

Is the search function working yet? There's a thread titled something like "What software are you using" that goes on for 3 or 4 pages.

all i've ever used is cakewalk...

what i love about sonar is all audio edits can be done in the track view no need to open another window to do edits, since i have only one monitor and its small this is a great help for me, and midi is second to none very accurate and it will keep ur instruments in sync

i know absolutely nothing about midi, so i havent used sonar for that yet. but soon, im sure ill get involved with it. its still a scarey thought right now....

With Logic you can configure your windows any way you want, save them, and bring them up by hitting a number on the numeric keypad. Don't know if this unique. Logic is all I've ever used.

I gotta go with Nuendo as the best, with Logic second And Cubase VST 3rd. Once Cubase SX comes out that order will probably change.

Cakewalk products can save window settings/layouts as well.

Is there anything in the $100 and less range besides n-trak that does 24 bit?
