WHICH MONITORS DO I CHOOSE?
I'm convinced that I need monitors and I need to stop relying so heavily on my headphones. I've been using just my headphones since I started recording (August 2003). My"studio" is the extra bedroom on the 2nd floor of our house...approximately 12 x 12...typical painted drywall walls and wooden doors...one window to the outside (6x4). I have a Digi001 (PC) and a PodXT.

I record my own music...acoustic & electric guitar, bass, keyboard (midi) and vocals. The drum tracks are recorded elsewhere. I record my music because I can - because I want to - and because it's cool.

What's are my best choices for monitors? While I would like to keep the budget as low as possible, I want quality that will last me a while.

Thanks!
Jay

P.S. Any other suggestions for getting my "studio" up to snuff would also be appreciated. No need to retype existing articles....a link to it would be fine! Go Blue Bear!

I use Yorkville YSM1s. --- www.yorkville.com --- I also have a Digi001 and a G4 based studio. The Yorkvilles are good. Not great. They are inexpensive and fairly accurate. I've had them for about 7 years now. I wanna upgrade, but no money in sight right now. Mackies if you can afford it. Behringer Truths if you can't. Yorkvilles if you aren't ready to spend too much or think too much about it.

Peace.

The Other Equipment and Reviews forum has a bunch of threads about monitors. The entry level Event TR5 and TR8 are pretty nice for the money and are convenient because they are self powered. I have the TR5s and love them, and have heard things in recordings I never knew existed. BUT - they're only 5" woofers - they can't produce an accurate bottom end no matter what else they do well. I tried to bridge the gap with subwoofers - not very successfully. The larger (and more expensive) TR8s will do a better job of getting the bottom end. Behringer gets knocked around a bit here because they focus on entry level stuff and the quality is marginal for the claims. But the Behringer Truth monitors have gotten some very good reviews. Go to the other forum and do some searches; watch for comments by people who actually have used the equipment.

Yorkville YSM1's rock, I love em'. (I have the YSM1 powered monitors). They're in the area of $400.

Yamaha msp5's

you don't see this often, but here's a good review of the MSP5: ;)

"For any of you who are shopping for your first set of quality monitors to use with your recording system, I recommend the MSP5’s heartily! They are compact, internally powered, and sound and look great! Your mixes will travel well from system to system and they don’t eat up a lot of space in a crowded control room. The best part is, the low end response of these mini brutes is sufficient enough you may not find the need for another set of larger monitors unless you are working with content that has a lot of low frequency energy."

The fact is that ANY one of the monitors mentioned will make a drastic improvement in your mix.

And if money is tight check out the M-Audio line

Ive seen alot of people unempressed by the M-Audio line monitors. Yorkvilles or Yamaha msp5s if you can affoard one of the two. I recommend the Reveals if you are going for passive and amp. I think you will have to pay alot more if you are looking for better quality.

Thanks for everyone's response. It looks like I'm going to go with the Yorkville YSM1P or the Yamaha MSP5. I'd like to to listen to both of them out before I make the decision. It's the right price range and I believe the quality will suit me fine.

My favorite comment was "

"The fact is that ANY one of the monitors mentioned will make a drastic improvement in your mix." by jcmm. He's absolutely right.

Again...thanks....

I just came into a pair of Alesis M1 Actives.

I would suggest these monitors, also.

They cost about $399.00 USD a pair.

These are not the same as Monitor One's in fact, they give a GREAT response.

I was reluctant to use them at first. Now, I use them instead of my Event 20/20's.

Peace...
