I'm looking to spend about $200-300 on a pair of monitors. What would anyone recommend?

Is it even worth getting monitors if I'm only spending that much?

its worth it to a degree, but the nagain no its not worth it, there are the krk rokits and the m-audio bx5a's to choose from. if you save up about 200-300 more ull be in the tannoy, mackie, event ranges.

recommend-

my 2cents today...

Local USED....

I got a passive setup for $275, which was $1100 new (included $600 speakers and a $500 power amp....125speakers and 150 amp)

OLD FARTHEAD SPEAKS:
Beware Ebay and Paypal rippoffs or your really screwed... High Risk not good if you have very little money.

BUY LOCAL used.

tip: GC had a pair of my speakers "used", they gave me $100 and put them on the shelf for $275..so there's some haggling information for you.
Pawn Shops are even worse about mark up...ah! but they drop the price greatly when they see GREENBACK$$$. $275 can go to $100 very quick. :D

Well it may or may not be worth it, it depends on what youre mixing on now. If youre on headphones or something then monitors would definately be worth it. But if you are using bookshelf or other speakers that you are comfortable with and are getting good mixes you may not even need monitors. I was mixing on some bose home theater speakers that had an extremely hyped low end when I decided to get monitors. I had the same budget as you and I ended up going with some krk rp5's. I found them on ebay for 300 shipped and they came with a free akg d880 microphone. Im convinced they are the best monitors you can buy new for 300 dollars and other people think so too. They are extremely crisp and have an ok bass response for a 5" speaker.
