I have Audiophile 2496 and I need help in the deciding what mixer to purchase.

I was looking at the Tascam M-164UF and the Mackie 1402-VL3. I've narrowed it down to these two because of my preference for faders and that from where I will purchase the product these are part of only a handful that will be in stock for the forseeable.

I came across the Tascam first and noted it was an audio-interface aswel using USB 2.0, you can record 16 inputs to their own tracks.

  • (I'm assuming that if I had 3 instruments playing at the same time on channels 1-3 on the mixer, cubase would be recording on them channels in the software as long as the record button has been selected on those channels/tracks, correct?)

  • Would purchasing this make my Audiophile obsolete?

I then found the Mackie, that I assume can use with my Audiophile. I think this would mean I can only record one track at a time?

  • (I'm assuming all though I have instruments on different channels on the mixer, I will need to select a track or add a track and then record each instrument seperately, selecting new tracks, correct?)

  • Can either of these mixer's be used whether or not I have the computer turned on?

  • Is it important to have a mute/solo option/button on a mixer?

I only have a midi keyboard at the moment as I've only ever recorded via midi, but I'm preparing for the future. As I'm transitioning to hardware and going to be buying a few bits over the next few months. The mixer, a motif, an mpc, korg r3 among other bits and pieces.

I would like the mixer to be some what versatile as I obtain instruments and may change my recording habits.
