I use a 4 mic drum setup..
kick/snare
two oheads to catch the toms, cymbals, hihat.

Which pair of these two mics would you choose for the ohead/tom/cymbal micing?
and I guess... why/why not ? thanks all for your advice on this!
SP C-1s
AT 4033s
Rode NT 1s
Neuman km184's

thanks again!

have you already bought them? because if you haven't, I really like the Marhsall MXL603's, and for 79 bucks a pop, you can't go wrong. If you already bought them, I guess I'd use the neumanns or the 4033's as overheads. Maybe even the C-1's, but I wouldn't use the NT-1's, that's the only thing I can say for sure.

get the marshalls!

Thanks guys for your info.
Haven't bought them yet - I actually have 1 4033.

Do you think something like the marshalls could record for example a high school band (stereo)?
thanks again

Sure they'll "record", i don't know if it'll sound good though. It might. 160 bucks can't hurt too much to try it.

If money's really tight, Behringer ECM8000s are good at $40 each. They are an omni pattern, so they will pull in more ambient sound for better and worse.

If money's not that tight, the MXL 603s are great value and good sound.

If money's really not tight, get the km184s and never look back.

It's not on your list but...

A pair of AKG 451s are very sweet as overheads....

Here's my humble opinion. I have some KM-184's, 4033's, Earthworks SR-71's, Octava MK012's, AKG C-1000's and a few other pairs of small diaphram mics. Out of this short list of mics I own, the 4033's and the MK-012's see all the overhead duties. The 4033's sound best on jazzier style (more cymbal detail) and the 012's on rock (the rounder, darker sound tends to take the edge of thermo nuclear cymbal hits). Just my humble opinion.

Hey Bear! When you mention the 451s, do you mean the old classic model, or the current re-issue? Or do they both sound sweet as overheads? Heard a lot of good things about the oldies, but nothing other than magazine reviews (of which I'm generally sceptical) of the new models.

I can't imagine that out of that collection the mc012s and 4033s see more action than the KM-184s. I take it you like to save those for safer applications (like accoustic guitars and out of harm's way of an errant drum stick ? :D )

I like the 4033's. Don't rule out the AT Pro 37R's. I use them the most for O.H.'s and acoustic guitar. I would take them over the 603's.

I used to rent the old ones... tried the new ones... same capsule (CK-1), same sound as far as I can tell....

I have tried the 603's on bands and they work well. Just remember that the room is going to play a big part of how well those type of recordings sound. If you have to record in a high school gym, you will not like it. But if you can find a decent hall or old theatre or something I think you will be very surprised at the sound you get.
