Which Microphone?

I remember hearing that some mics are designed for instrument recording and others for voice. I've been using a rode nt1-a mic for recording my acoustic guitar but I'm not overly happy with the results. It sounds very "basey" and not clear and crisp. I place it just next to the sound board and play. I've experimented with using a plectrum and it sounds clearer, although I prefer to pluck and strum with my fingers. Do you think a different mic would help?

Also, I record through protools 6.4 le but don't have a mixer. Forgive me for my ignorance but would a mixer enable me to enhance the treble and quieten the base? Your feedback would be appreciated.

You can accomplish a lot with proper mic placement. Start with the mic aimed at about the 12th fret, 12" away from the guitar. Then make small adjustments in position until you find the "sweet spot" for that guitar, that mic, in that particular room. There's really no better way than trial and error. Avoid the soundhole at all costs, unless maybe you're using an omni mic, as there is just too much bass/boominess there.

IMO, other mics may be better suited to acoustic guitar duties. The Audio Technica 3033 is popular, as is the Shure SM81. Other options would include the MXL 603s/604, Oktava MC012, etc. There are plenty of expensive mics by Josephson, Earthworks, Neumann, and others that will handle this job even better.

VGreen, I suggest you read the sticky big mic thread(s) in the "Microphones" section. LOTS of good information there.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I'll give the 12th fret idea a go, right after I shoot off to the "mic" section.
