I jsut purchased a sony net md walkman mz-n707 type R MD LP. I also bought a sony ECM-717 stereo mic. I also have a Realsitic PZM mic. My question is this: What is the best 100 dollarish mic for recording my band live. We are a 3 piece: vocal, harp, guitr, bass, and drums. We play pretty quiet. The ECM-717 does an ok job, but am wondering if there is a better choice available. Thanks in advance. Walter

The kind of mic that you would use with the MD walkman is a different animal than what most of us are talking about here. So the mics you see folks praising here are for the most part useless to you. You will be looking for a single unit stereo mic with two small electret mics that uses plug-in power.

www.reactivesounds.com has a couple of cute and inexpensive ones. Of course if you really wanted the sound of a good microphone you could get a couple of large diameter condensers, pump it into something like a M-audio Duo, and then go from there take the spdif output to the minidisc input. But by then you have spent more than the cost of the minidisc recorder and you might as well just record to hard disk and be able to do real studio work with it.

you can use ANY mic that doesn't require phantom power as long as you make your own connector (which is dead easy) by putting the mono signal from the mic on both input channels on the connector. I am also using a Sony MD walkman and a Shure Beta 57A as a "notebook" when I am travelling and also to record some "outdoor sounds" (e.g. street noise, trains, etc., for later use in my songs). The sound quality is pretty decent. Alternatively, you might wanna get a stereo mic (Sony has some).

Do a google search on SONY one point mics. There's one for $100 that's very good, and one for $300 that rocks. I think it's ecm something.-Richie

you shoud try mic placement and room treatment first but. I have a 717 and am very pleased with it for the personal bootlegs and other live acts I've recorded. but if you really think a mic is all it takes check these guys out. sound pros
do a google for minidisc recording forums and there is all sorts of info out there. another is minidisc t station I love my MD:)

Thanks everyone for the info! I also have a old EV 666 mic. Is this one worth using to record the entire band sound with?

t_chance: I used my 717 and it worked fine except for the vocals. I set it about 20 feet in front of the stage and it picked up the instruments fine, but the vocals were burried in the rear. I am thinking of putting it right in front of one of the PA speakers. I like the vocals on top. The sound I use live is like the old chess records - vocals on top, no big boom bass and drums, and all around low volume. What do you think?

I forgot this: Does anyone know how the reactive sound mic Delta, compare to the sony. Again, thanks all for all the info. Walter

I think you should turn down the instruments.

grab a mix off the mixer?

I don't have one but one of those power modules that have the bass roll-off, but that would help the heavy bottom. I got that too. I EQ, maybe compress it a little, thow in a little reverb, and rip it to a CD

I am going to buy the reactive sounds spyder mic and juice box. I like that I can return them for a full refund if not satified. Thank you all for all of your help in this matter! Walter
