Hay guys, i was just wondering which mic is the best bang for your buck. I'm currently setting up a home studio and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to the best all aroung mic's. thanks.

They're all good. And they're all bad. Depending on your point of view.

.

lets say my price range is less than 200 and i'm gonna be recording mostly acoustic guitars and vocals.

I'm currently in posession of a tascam 424mkIII, if that's what you mean buy application, haha. I'm a definite noob.

Spend the $200 on an electric guitar & you won't need a microphone.

I wasn't specific before, i realize now. i am gonna be using the mic for recording.

I dont think the Tascam 424 has phantom power (which is needed for condenser mics) - I could be wrong though

So unless you want to get an external mixer, preamp, or portable phantom power supply, youre limited to dymanic mics.

It sounds like youre just getting started and just need a mic to get your ideas down. I hate to be the one to say it - but a Sm57 or Sm58 might be a good starting point. Though theyre not great at any one thing, theyre "ok" for a variety of things and its always nice to have a few around

I currently own an AT2020, and an external phantom power box thing(?), I'm just thinking about upgrading and i'm gonna be buying a mixer soon.

For 200 you're not going to do appreciably better than that 2020. You could have something different, like a cheap ribbon (eg Cascade Fathead) or a 57, as someone suggested. Save a little more or invest in room treatment, I say.

In that case.. I dont know what to tell you haha

I dont have a lot of mics and havent been able to try out the really expensive ones. What ive heard about the cheap condensers is that theyre all pretty similar to each other..

Just remember the most important thing in recording is the source. If your guitar sounds like crap, no mic in the world will change that.. If you cant sing, no mic in the world will make your voice sound better..

I bought an at3035 on ebay for 175$ CDN ,sounds good on guitar (acoustic) and good on voice. Go large Diaphragm

haha, a workman can't blame his tools i guess. what exactly is the diaphragm in the mic? I'm not too tach savy with mic's.

"Which mic is best?"

A lot of people will say "It depends... [on the song, performer, instrument, room, humidity, time of day...etc. etc.]" ; I say "The one that's plugged in and turned on when a killer performance is happening!"

In other words, no one can tell YOU which mic is best for your particular situation. Don't worry about it so much. Determine your budget, then try out as many mics in that range as you can, and make a decision (& don't take months, or weeks to do it).

The important thing is to start recording ASAP; do it as often as you can, and trust your ears & your gut. If you can't see the wisdom in that, you'll probably never progress.

This smells eerily like a "What's the best mic for under 200 dollars thread"!!!

Search the mic portion of the forum for 200. Literally, just the number... you'll prob get a lot of hits.

Here we go:
https://homerecording.com/bbs/search.php?searchid=1177729

I think searches can be re-run based on the address... if not, like I said - search Titles Only, in the mic forum. There's a lot of hits regarding the AKG 200 Perception, but the others are all "Mic under 200", etc etc.

Aight, so basically what most of you are saying is that unless i'm willing to pay big bucks i'm good with my AT2020?

Well, I think the point is that "upgrading" from a $100 mic to a $200 mic is not really much of an upgrade. That said, I'd recommend the CAD M179 as a very good mic to have in the under-$200 category.
