Hi. I wan't to purchase a recording interface for my computer. Either Firewire or USB so I can use it on a desktop or laptop. I don't know much about any of this but I think I have narrowed it down to 2 M-Audio Interfaces.

M-Audio OmniStudio USB

M-Audio Firewire Audiophile

I have a couple questions. Has anyone here used either of these? Are there any pro or cons to using either Firewire or USB? Also, I can't figure out how many inputs are on either interface. I don't think I would need more then 2 at a time (1 acoustic guitar, vocals), but it would be nice to have more. The Audiophile says it has 4 inputs but I don't see any Mic inputs, how would I plug my microphone in? Would I have to buy an pre-amp for either of these interfaces, or do they come built in?

Thanks alot for the help.

Firewire all the way. USB is an unreliable interface when it comes to audio. Firewire is quite the opposite.

I was at the same position like you a couple of weeks back and finally bought the M Audio Firewire Solo. It comes with the guitar and mic input in front with built in phantom power. I have since recorded some direct electric guitars with Kristal software with great results. Im getting a mic soon to record some acoustic/vocals.

I've got the USB omnistudio and think for the price it does a great job. For $200 you get 2 mic pre-amps with phantom power and pads, 2 headphone outputs, and a fair amount of flexibility in routing. Hope this info helps, ciao!

Thanks everyone for the advice. I think I have decided on getting the Omnistudio USB, since I wouldn't have to buy a mixer or pre-amp. I am still having trouble figuring out how many inputs there are in the Omnistudio. I see the 2 mic inputs which have preamps, and on the back there are 2 line in. Could I use the line in inputs if I bought a mixer? So I would have a total of 4 inputs with the Omnistudio? Is that correct?

Thanks alot.
