Which is the best quality plugins?

I like some of the Waves plugins, but I'm just like the others here, once I got my UAD 1, that was the end of most of the software plugins.

Now I understand your tone. Sorry, I misunderstood.

:D No worries Ryanlikestorock!

Out of curiosity, do you have any favourite compressors out of the ones you've tried on the UAD-1? I like a little good EQ and all, but I'm really a compressor addict. :)

Cheers,

Johann

I think Massive Master might have a lot more to say about the details of the UAD-1 compressors. I just got the card last week and only got the project pak, not the studio pak. I also do more mastering than mixing, so I really haven't had much of an opportunity to use this stuff yet.

Even still, on the mixes I have been working on, the 1176 SE has been a great compressor (not much CPU power needed, decent sound, simple controls). I haven't used much of the channel strip or EQ yet. It'll take a while to get used to them.

However, for mastering, the Pultec Pro EQ has very quickly found its way into my life. If you've heard that simply turning it into the "on" position is worth its price, you heard correctly. It really is that good.

I've heard some great reviews about the Fairchild and I plan on buying it in the next couple months. If the reviews I've read and heard are true, it's probably the best software compressor around. If the Fairchild can come close to adding what the Pultec did to my projects and my understanding of audio, it's worth 10x the price.

Just as I write this, the rain begins to pour down outside. At the same time, the sun comes out, creating this massive rainbow in the sky. If that's not a sign from a higher power about the power of the Fairchild, I don't know what is. :)

Here's something about the Fairchild - As wonderful as it is for tracking and *maybe* some light parallel use in mastering, I VERY rarely pull it out for much of anything. The low cut / mid definition that is the unit's "trademark" is wonderful for vinyl (what it was desgined for). For most "modern" applications, I'm not a fan.

Should you have it? Certainly. Is it the end-all-be-all of software mastering compression? Hardly.

That being said, I use a Manley Vari-Mu, which is based on the Fairchild's circuitry. However, the Manley, while it has that same "glue" as the Fairchild, doesn't restrict the low end like the FC. Put it on some vocals or a guitar buss and you're gonna be a happy dude. Put it across a "retro" sounding mix, and you'll probably still be happy. On more modern sounding stuff, well, that's a matter of taste I guess... Shortly after the thing came out, everyone was yelping about it being the "greatest mastering plugin" available. We started calling it "Child Abuse."

The LAT/VERT controls on the other hand... Those can come in handy once in a while as a parallel - MUCH easier than setting up a M/S matrix, and basically just as effective in certain situations.

ANYWAY - Glad you found my favorite setting on the Pultec - Amazing, isn't it?

I tend to use the Fairchild on the Master buss along with the Cambridge EQ and either the LA2A or 1176 for some very light limiting; this to simulate mastering. I mix into this combo but just before burning the final stereo file, turn off the Fairchild and 1176 and do a 150 Hipass to simulate small speakers. This gives focus to the midrange and helps me define bass and kick for smaller speakers. Then I take everything off the master buss and make final touchups prior to the burn.

The Pultecs, at my house, always go on the piano. That's what Elton John used to used to get those sparkly keys. It just really enhances soundfont or giga pianos. Add a little 16K and the air and ambiance puts space in your keyboard tracks.

vintage warmer is a compressor? i DID not know that...

see you learn somethign every day. One of my buddies has the vintage warmer thing. I thought it was a high end "tube warmer" thing, you know, to add a little softening tube mild distortion. I was playing over at his house with it, but couldnt get it to "tube" up the vocal track i'm always piddling around with to learn...now i know why. I had absulutely no idea it was a compressor...lmao.

If you do a DILIGENT search on VST plugins, you would be surprised at all of the stuff you can find, free and legal. Granted, theyre not "pro level", but then a lot of us home experimenters dont have a couple grand to drop on "such and such" card and plugin (yet...lol). Yah, a lot of the stuff is neat effects only useable to morph wav's for electronica type stuff, but there's a lot out there free. You just gotta spend as much time as a horny kid spends looking for free porn.

I'm gonna have to start a new thread on free legal VST's people reccomend, so's i can get the "good stuff".

UAD CPU Usage

Help please-

A UAD-1 is my next purchase, but I have heard mixed info on the CPU usage (I know it has its own processor, but some say it still bogs the CPU a lot). I have a 1000 mhz Athlon processor and 128K RAM. Will that be sufficient to run the UAD using compression, EQ and reverb on 6 to 8 tracks?

If that's out of the question, I would still get it and run some compression and EQ in the master buss, but I would like to know about the limitations.

Thanks.

Thanks for the great replies on the UAD-1! Interesting that there isn't a consensus on where / how to use it -- that's great, it means it's versatile.

Incidentally SEDstar, distortion is compression!

Also leddy I can't answer your question -- I'll leave that to the UAD-1 users :) -- but do you really need 6-8 reverbs? It's a lot more efficient to sum all of your tracks onto 1 or 2 "aux" buses and then strap the verbs across those.

Thanks all + cheers,

Johann
