i used to record vocals for hours and my knees starts to pain...So will it be better to record while sitting or standing..?? Which is effective:)

Air Flow

I think you are better off musically to be standing because of the air flow being constricted with the sitting position. I would advise taking more breaks but keep standing.

DITTO

Standing is better.

One thing you can do to ease your knees...is get a tall stool, that way you are basically standing, but you can lean on the stool while still standing, and/or sit on it between takes to rest.

I think Composerdan and Miroslav are right. Logically, standing or lying down {yes, lying down ! I'm not kidding.} gives you the most capacity for unrestricted air flow. I always stand as I find it easier to hit certain notes, sort of gyrating my way into the high-ish ones !
But it's by no means the only way. Recently someone that I've sung with for over a decade was doing some singing with me and over the years, she'd always tried sitting and one of my friends and I used to rib her about it and so we always stood and sung. But since she's been doing singing lessons and getting all courageous and up for a fight {:D ;) }, she's been adamant that she can sing just as powerfully sitting down. And she can, you know. She's got a vast voice {we've always joked that she doesn't really need a mic} and I had to concede on that one. Her voice was just as good. Personally, I find I can't control my voice in the same way, sitting down, or maybe I'm just so used to standing.
Interestingly, if I'm playing guitar and singing while sitting, I have less problems with my voice so maybe it's all in my head/ damn laziness.

Sometimes...you have no choice but lay down when singing....just to keep from passing out.

not to take away from the airflow points which are bang on, I say:

Do it how you practice. If you sit do practice sit to perform, if you sit at a piano to practice record there, if you have a guitar on your lap when you practice have it when you record (just don't play it if you are trcking separate)

You should be comfortable when you record. If you change things up and don't do what you normally do when you record, you won't get a natural performance and it will show in the recording. (man I wish I had figured this out before recording my first two little EP projects)

as always YMMV

A lot of people say standing because it opens your diaphram more. This is also why some engineers/recording dudes will place the mic slighly higher than mouth level to further expand that diaphram. However, I think it also depends on the vocalist. Personally, when I track vocals I have to put put a lot of pressure on my diaphram to get the guttural sound that I want. This is usually accomplished by placing the mic at waist level and me bending over to get to the mic. if you can sit and get the same (or better) performance out of your voice as you do while standing (or vice versa) then to hell with "proper technique".

Honestly, I do whatever I need to get the singer to deliver. I always start out making the guy stand in front of a mic. Usually it ends that way.

My most recent recording was of a guy who is just not a singer. I know he's not a singer. He knows he's not a singer. But his quirky voice was needed on this song. After trying this that and the other thing, he ended up sitting on a bean bag cussion propped up against a stack of amps singing into a hand held mic because... that's how he said he does it for his own demos. Not the mic I wanted. Not the positioning I wanted. Whatever. He delivered a take we could use.

Another time a different singer remained standing but switched to a stage mic on a stand, ditched the headphones, and cranked the monitor speakers up to stage volume.

So I'll agree that if a guy knows what he is doing, he should be standing. Just keep an open mind for the other guys. :D

It doesn't matter much, most singers like to stand.

Since it's more about feel the scientific technical truth doesn't matter as much as the scientific technicians would like you to think.

Great vocals have been laid down either way.

Vocalists stand. I am merely someone who sings, so I sit. Unless I feel like dancing, which isn't often.
