they seem pretty equal in stats, and I can get them for the same price, so which should I go with?

All the Boss machines record in compressed data, so your sound quality takes a defiinite hit. The BR-8 has more bells and whistles, but the bells and whistles are utter crap compared to what you can get for free in software plug-ins, so...

I owned a couple of Boss products before the mr8 and while you can technically "do more" with the BR8 from a standalone perspective, the bottom line for me is the sound quality, especially since I do my mixing on the computer. So I suppose it depends on where you're planning to do your mixing. If one of the deciding factors for you is Boss's "amp modeling", let me warn you: it sucks eggs.

Cheers,
Chris

mr8

this model is one of the few units that doesnt use compressed data, you have to get a more expensive unit otherwise...... i love my mr8,you do need to use the computer to mix though, its easy and cheap too...

yeah, thanks guys, that what I've been hearing, about the compressed crap, well I have a couple of mixing programs on my comp already, so I guess I'll get the MR-8

I agree...i love my mr8 and I also use n-track...thanks dave in toledo....they work real well together and you will be suprised how good a quality you can have using them both. BTW, I also use a Behringer UB mixer with the mr8 to take advantage of the preamps and phantom power. This set up is cheap, easy to use...and makes DARN GOOD MUSIC!

I also have a Tascam that compresses data and there is no comparison in terms of sound quality - the MR-8 is far and away the best thing out there in the price range (although that seems to be true for all Fostex gear.)
