Which hard drive?

Hi

I am having to rebuild my computer. Is there a particular make of HD you would recommend? Thanks.

They are all pretty bad these days and have a high failure rate. I just had a segate go south after 6 months. Stick to the higher end and you should be OK (WD Black)
 
if i had to replace my hard drive i'd be shopping for high quality ssd drives..

i bought a pair of wd raptor drives....i can't fault them on speed but they're a little noisy for recording :(
 
I have built a rig with SSD (Patriots) and to be honest there is not a lot of benefit (IMO) over Seagate Baracudas or WD Caviars/Black except there is zero spooling noise but the drives cost over 4 times as much as a Seagate or WD and they are about 1/5th the capacity

Right now SSDs are more about read speed and certainly boot and app loading times are incredible but there is little to no benefit on write speeds which is what's important for recording.

If you are looking at more than 50-60 simultaneous inputs (tracks recorded at the same time) then a Velociraptor drive would be the way to go and once you get above say 90 simultaneous inputs then a RAID 0 array may be in order.

For basic no nonsense home recording, I'd Say WD Caviar/Black or Seagate Baracudas are more than adequate but that's just my opinion, YMMV

So long as the drive provides enough bandwidth and capacity then it's good enough, getting anything faster (unless you are expecting a large increase in you simulatneous recording requirements) will make absolutely no difference to your music whatsoever. Sometimes good enough is good enough
 
Thanks as usual for your invaluable advice and info. Would this be a reasonable set up then? Anything I've missed/I should change? It's best to have two HD, right, one for programs etc and one for audio?

looks like a nice setup,,,i can't see any problems there...

i have to agree with bristol,,,
even with the raptors, i notice faster load times of programs/audio, but really, in day to day recording use, there's not much of a boost over a good 7200 drive..

You might need a motherboard?? :confused: :)

I've got 2 Seagate Berracudas (250 GB & 500 GB). Both are still running strong and haven't given me any problems. :D I've also got a WD Caviar 120 GB that I use in an external drive and I haven't had any problems out of it either.
