I just want a keyboard that is good for triggering samples synths & sounds. It would be nice if the keyboard could also play standard piano sound alone w/out being connected to a keyboard. What do you all recommend for less than $500? This includes used keyboards.

Someone else also recommended the Korg N-1. How is this?

Any of the Korgs after the T and 01 series are cheaper low cost repackaging of the same technology. That would include the N and X series synths. I owned both the M1 and X5D. The difference in key action, built quality and sound was like night and day. The N and X series synths are cheaper because Korg cut corners, especially with the DACs.

The Korg Tritiny and Triton boards are still pretty much repackaged technology from the M and T series but still use quality hardware.

Its pretty sad when you stop to think about it. Korg hasn't done anything truly innovative in 15 years...

I finally played the Keystation 88 Pro at Sam Ash last weekend. I didn't like the action at first, it was little on the bouncy side, but, as I played it, it grew on me. Also, it's likely that that might settle down with use. I'm sure the one I played was pretty new. I trust my sales guy there and he liked it a lot.

Now, of course, it doesn't have any sounds, you know that, right? It's strictly a controller.

EM gave it a KeyBuy award this month and said it should sell like the Yamaha KX88 from 20 years ago (arguably the best piano action controller of all time).

It sure has a ton of controls on it and they feel great! The only negative, and it's kind of a major one for me, is that it doesn't send aftertouch from the keyboard. At least not as far as I can tell.
