Im getting an Alesis Masterlink delivered this week and was just wondering what are the best types of CD to mixdown onto? I want them to be reliable and play on any stereo.

Also on the same note, is it better to record to Redbook or CD24 standard??

If you want them to play on standard audio CD players, then you have no choice but to burn Redbook....

You use CD24 to save hi-res audio to CD-R (these become AIFF data files, instead of audio)........

You also can't get 100% compatibility with CD-Rs, since some older CD players can have trouble reading them -- that being said, in over 4 years, I've only ever had one client have a problem reading Masterlink-created discs - and it was because his machine was defective (he even had problems playing commercially-pressed discs...)

Ok so Redbook rather than CD24 for playing in home stereos etc...

Im after CR-Rs yeah? Not CDRW? Is there a particular brand i should lean towards?

Regardless of the label, there's only about 4-5 companies that actually manufacture the CD-R media... I've used a wide variety of them and have never had a problem........

For high-quality projects I'll use Mitsui........ otherwise for normal use Maxell, HP, Sony, TDK - they've all been fine......

i used to use maxcell/memorex/fuji.
Butout of a spool of 50 id always get 5 to 10 that were defective.
Now i use a brand called microboards. I never have problems with thier
cd-r's. If its a really impotant disc, like a final mix, or important data i use an apogee reference archive cd-r.

I have the Plextools software that allows me to check error rates on the CDRs I burn with CD Architect. Maxell runs about 40 C1 errors/sec and Memorex about 20 (the tolerance is 220 for Red Book).

Taiyo Yuden's are preferred among the ME's and duplicators I've spoken to.

I'm a happy Taiyo Yuden user without question. Obviously, the drive may have a preference, but if I get a production master that averages more than 2 or 3 C1's per second with a TY, I'm surprised.

thanks everyone....

Some good info there, i will definately use it when coming to buy cd's.

Not that it matters - Ive just been informed delivery date for my masterlink is gonna be another 2 weeks!!! GRrrrRRR
