Which CD Recorder ?

Hello guys,

I am looking to purchase a standalone CD recorder to master down to from my MD8, and I was wondering if you could tell me what standalone CD recorders (brand / model #s) , like Philips or pioneer you use or could recommend ? What have you had luck with ?

Just like I rap on the Yorkville monitors and the Beyer 770 cans, good old Bruce pushes the Alesis Masterlink.

I agree Bruce. I've been dawdling around for 5 months trying to decide. I think I'll start shopping for the best price on a Masterlink.

Bruce! How can I be sure I get the updated model?

Hey green-one!

ML9600 is the actual model number of the Masterlink... the latest software version is v2.02... software updates for the Masterlink are downloadable, and very easy to apply (requiring only that you burn the s/w datafile onto a data CD)... you pop the CD into the machine and off you go!

So don't worry a whole lot about the version you get when you buy it, just get the best price you can, then if you have to upgrade, no problem!

It sure would be nice to have the best equipment but I, like many have a champagne appetite but am on a beer budget. So what else would work ?

You might want to check out the Tascam CDRW 700. I've seen them priced between 5/6 hundred; it would pay to call all of the 800 numbers you can to all of the major dealers and see what they will do.

There are, of course, a "bunch" of CDRW boxes out there; the most "frugal" price I've seen was on a Phillips box.

Start shopping and good luck with your beer budget. Lebatts is pretty good stuff though.

What do you use to mix down to from your MD8 ?

And do you think the Sony CDRW33 and The Tascam CD-RW700 are significantly better than the dime a dozen Philips and Pioneers decks ? Is there a audible difference ?

At the moment, I mix my MD8 down to a Sony ES tape deck. The tape deck has an auto-evaluate sound feature; however, I usually dial in the amount of input from MD to Tape.

I am also looking and evaluating the CDRW boxes out there and I"m probably going for the Masterlink so I can hound Bruce with questions about it.

I can't give you an "ear" evaluation on the Phillips boxes or a comparison to Sony or Tascam; but, on a gut feeling, I'd go for the Tascam from recommendations from friends out there.

I suggest you take a trip to a major seller of boxes, like Full Compass, Sweetwater, or someplace near you where you can LISTEN AND EVALUATE what you get for the $$$.

Or, find someone rich and run off and build a studio.

I'm using the Sony CDRW-33. It has EQ, limiting and the Sony SBM. It also has optical in, digital in and out and analog in and out. I've only used the SBM feature which seems to give the recording a little more fullness and warmth

Are you Satisfied with it and does it do all you want it to ?

Is it easy to operate ?

How good is the D/A A/D converters, and does the EQ and limiting work well and are they effective ?

I use it to mixdown from an MD8 and do mostly occassional demo, live and practice recording.

It is very easy to use. Has a remote that works with or with out a cable.

I haven't used the limiting and EQ features yet. I've only had it for a few months.

As far as the D/A A/D converters go, I don't have anything to compare it to other than a cassette deck that was my previous mixdown device. I just started recording this past august, so I'm very new to home recording. I do like the sound I get on my recordings, particularly acoustic stuff. I use SM-57 and inexpensive AT MB4000C small diaphragm condenser mics. I wish I could offer a more pro opinion on it, but I don't have enough experience with it or other units. I have gotten compliments though on recordings I've made of other band's practices.
 
Fuck frozen electricity. It's them those live wire wild horses that have all the fun.
