Alright, I've got it narrowed down to these two cases. Both are good. One is rackmount and the other is not. All of my other components are pretty solid and I'm happy with all of them.

The cases:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129024

The components:
MOBO - Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P LGA 775 Intel P45
CPU - Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 Yorkfield 2.83GHz LGA 775
RAM - G.Skill 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 1066
PSU - Antec Signature SG650 650W Continuous Power
Video - ASUS EN8400GS SILENT/HTP/512MB GeForce 8400 64-bit
HDD's - Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS x 3
CPU Heat Sink - Xigmatek HDT-S1283 120mm Rifle CPU Cooler
Fans - Scythe S-FLEX SFF21D 120mm Case Fan x 2
Misc - Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound

If it's italicized, that means I found it on silentpcreview.com.

yes quieter then at least the $99 tower one you posted. Sonata cases are probably THE quietest. You'll also have a spare PSU if you ever need it. I don't know anything about that rackmount case you posted but again you CAN'T go wrong with a sonata case. :)

Thanks. Upon further investigation, I'm taking that HUSH case off the list. I read more of the reviews and I don't think it's as good as I had initially though. I've updated my OP with the Sonata case.

Is there a reason you didn't choose an i7 CPU? I just wonder if its a price thing or compatibility thing.

I thought about it. They run too hot, IMO. I also expect that other component prices go up if you get that CPU.

EDIT: Yeah, I checked and for the components I would get, the price would jump up over $150.

At this point, I'm about 90% sure I want the Lian Li case.

Sonata cases are probably THE quietest.

Not quite:

this Zalman case is pretty much a giant heatsink.

Or you could go watercooled. Either way, no fans = less noise.

To the OP: You don't need artic silver.

See if you can find a case with 120mm or larger fans and buy a fan controller. Same with your HSF. Get a big Zalman and crank down the fan speed. Run big fans at low speed for the quietest system.

.

umm yeah and about $7 times as much roughly. I'm talking about your regular tower case you'll usually come across on newegg. Sonata will be the quietest. I'm sure MR is looking to build a a complete system for around the price as the Zalman case alone.:D

I will say though that the above Zalman case is top notch, just maybe not the best option for most home recordists. :D

Why do I not need the Arctic Silver?

I already have a highly rated (according to silentpcreview.com) heat sink on my list. The XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 120mm Rifle CPU Cooler that I'm going to possibly attach a Scythe 120mm fan to.
