I have a very limited budget, but a very big need. My budget is only about 300 dollars at the most. I need a soundcard with at least 4 ins where I can at least mic my drum kit with 4 mics. I would prefer however 8 ins. I was wandering if there is any soundcard that could fulfill this need. I would also prefer at least 24/48 recording. Thanks in advance. Matt

does the $300 include preamps or do u have that covered?.....

unfortunatly, I do not have any preamps. Thanks in advance. Matt

I just remembered that I do have a fostex x34 I could use as a mixer and it has preamps however it does not have busses so then I could only record one channel for editing purposes on my computer. Is this correct or is there anything that I am missing. I will now stop because I have confused myself. Thanks in advance. Matt

Hey thanks for the plug there gidge! :)

With your 4-track you can do 2 channels, left and right. Those fostex 4-track units are noisier than hell though....and why not, they're just designed for cassette tape recording which is already noiser than hell. I thought I could use my X28 as a cheapo preamp...the noise floor is like -30db or something ridiculous. But whatever, you can give it a try. Otherwise the audio buddy is a good deal. You could just buy one audio buddy for now and dump the rest into a soundcard, and then try to use the fostex for the remaining two channels you need (maybe just stick it on snare & kick or something you can gate the hell out of).

Anything in the M-Audio line is a worthwhile first purchase. The Delta44, 66, 1010LT, and 1010 would all suite your needs. The 44 starts at $230+ new, and they scale upwards from there.
