Budget: US $150
(I have some credit at Musicians Friend so I'd rather buy from them but if not, so be it)

I need to get a stereo headphone amp with a minimum of three headphone outputs.

Sources are the mixer (CR Out +4DBu) and the playback from the recorder (Line Out -10DBu). I like the idea of flipping a switch/turning a knob to switch sources rather than plugging/unplugging.

Separate volume controls are a must (quite a variation in band mates in terms of hearing)

Headphones it may need to drive:
Grado SR40
Grado SR60
Yamaha RH2B
Audio Technica ATH-M2X
JVC HA-G101
AKG K-44
Nady QH360

Uses:
1. drive 'phones playing recorded mix during tracking
2. allow live recording of acoustic and electric instruments (can't use monitors with a live microphone) driving 'phones from mixer

I'm looking at two Behringer products:
Powerplay Pro-8 HA8000
Powerplay Pro-XL HA4700
http://www.behringer.com/02_products/groupindex.cfm?mid=2&smid=1&lang=ENG#AUDIO SOLUTIONS
which seem like possible solutions. Which would you recommend? What else should I be looking at?

(More money is not available for this)

thanks,

The newer Powerplay HA8 something or other has two pairs of stereo inputs that are switchable on each channel, I believe, plus a direct in that covers all 8 channels, and a direct in for each individual channel. It drives 8 pairs of headphones with individual volume controls. I think they run around $130 new. I'm thinking about picking one up in the near future.

I just got the HA4700, and I like it a lot. I put it side by side to the HA8000, and it came out as the winner. It had more functions and flexibility per channel. I think the only advantage the HA8000 has the volume control for 8 channels.

I don't like that the direct inputs for each channel are on the front of the HA4700. I like the out of sight inputs on the back of the HA8000 a bit more.

everyone i know who's used them thinks they're perfectly good. i'd choose one with the features you want, and, if it matters, whichever looks best!!!!

I think I will be going for the HA8000

Maybe someone can answer another question for me. Can one connect RCA outputs (for example, from a CD Player) to out of the input sections of the PowerPlay (1/4")?

I have an adapter cable that goes from red and white RCA to stereo 1/4". If you plug in a stereo jack to only one side (e.g. only left) of the input, will it correctly interpret that as stereo?

thanks

It'll interpret that as a mono left playing on both left and right- but the true right channel will not exist.
