This is kind of a continuation of my last post but I thought I would get a better response with a new thread. I used the search but it didnt help much.

Im looking for some recomendations for which Asus motherboard to get to use with a Pentium 4 processor. The computer will be used mostly for recording but also some general use. I plan on using around a 1.8 - 2.2 gig P4. I dont need any fancy add-ons however onboard audio would be nice to hold me over till I can buy a real sound card.

Or, if you guys know of a good P4 motherboard that is made by a well-known reliable company like Asus let me know as well. Looking to spend less than 100 bucks on the mobo. Thanks for any help guys!!

ASUS P4B533

Nothing ever went wrong with my p4 2.4 gig. I bought it based on others' recommendations around here

Thanks alot AIA2. That was actually one of a couple I was considering. I might get that one. Any other opinions??

ASUS P4PE/L/SATA/F/onboard audio

Excellent board...I know because I use it :D
Although I have onboard audio disabled

Thanks Stealthtech!! Looks like a sweet board but maybe a little more than what I need. Im trying to cut costs wherever possible.

I understand...you can get this board without all the added features. Just a plain ol P4PE with onboard audio will run about $107.00
The nice thing about this board is it will support over 3gig if you decide to upgrade a CPU in the future. Plus it uses Hyper-Threading-Technology and the 845e chipset.

Hmmm....where exactly did you find the P4PE that cheap?? Ebay?? I cant even find the P4B533 that cheap. My buying source right now is newegg.com but if I can get the P4PE cheaper I definately will. Please tell me more.

Now your talking over my head.

Thanks again Stealth!! Those links helped out alot. I put together my own barebones system and it looks like I can get it a little cheaper by putting it together myself and buying components from different sources. So far this is what Im looking at:

unitedmicro.com
Asus P4PE - $112.00
Aspire Case 350W - $46.00

newegg.com
Pentium4 1.7ghz - $123.00
Maxtor 40GB HD - $73.00

Crucial
256MB RAM - $45.00

Total = $399.00

Unitedmicro.com quoted me $489 plus shipping for exact same components.
I already have a CD-ROM (will buy a burner later), floppy, monitor, mouse, keyboard and Windows 98. Better sound card will come later. If anyone knows where I can get anything listed cheaper please let me know. Thanks again for the help!!

Thanks alot for the links. Looks like Im still coming out cheaper with my previous selections.

Take a look at this board.

http://usa.asus.com/inside/p4g8x.htm

It uses the Intell E7205 chip set and up to 4gig of ram (when 1gig sticks come down it price) along with Hyper-Threading
and the 3.06 Pentuim chip with 533 MHz frount side bus.

I came accross this thread when I did a search for the P4PE mobo. I have just replaced and old ASUS with the ASUS P4PE and 2.4 Gig P4 533 cpu. I went for the mobo with integrated audio but no firecard.

I did all the work myself, had a few glitches along the way but have got it all together slowly but surely.

A question I would like to ask concerns the audio drivers for the mobo. I have noticed that my windows mixer/volume control is disabled. The advice I have been given is that I have to load the audio drivers from the ASUS CD(as yet, I haven't done so)...and then disable the audio in the BIOS:confused: Is that true? My sound card is a Delta 66+omni, so I don't particularly want the audio part of the mobo...but I do need the windows mixer/volume controls.

Do you have any comments/advice for me on this? I have enabled the midi controls in BIOS which loads the Roland drivers into Sonar's midi setup.
