Which area would be better for recording?

First off, my house is messy, deal with it :)

A few days ago my mom suggested moving my guitar stuff from the basement up into her sewing room. She would be able to create a "get-together" sewing area for her quilting friends and her sewing room would be the best spot in my house to practice/record.

For the past year or so my band has been stuck in the back corner of my basement for practicing and recording. If you look at pictures 0052 and 0054 you can see that there is not much room in the back of the basement, and since the basement is unfinished I ASSUME that the sound I get in recording is affected by the environment I'm in. I do not know much about acoustics, but I don't think what you see in those 2 pictures is ideal for recording.

If you take a look at pictures 0049 and 0055 you will see that spot that my mom wants to use for her sewing "get-together" area, and picture 0059 is a shot of the room that my mom has now for a sewing room.

Everything was going along smoothly for switching up the rooms until we realized a shelf in the sewing room is not going out of that room (taking up value space in the room), and my dad don't really seem to be to interested in this whole process, so he suggested I use the spot in pics 49 and 55 for my recording/practice area. My question to you guys is will this area so ok for recording? Its in my basement which is really big and open and I have a bad feeling I would get poor sound from the drums and they will echo in the ceiling or something. I'd figure a closed off square room like in picture 59 would be more ideal for a recording space.

So what do you guys think? Sewing room or the space in the basement?

Thanks a lot!

I'd get myself set up in that basement for sure, I'd kill for that much room!

Agreed, the basement gets you a general head start on isolation.

I'd clain ALL the basement. Just throw a strop if she refuses and tell her if she REALLY loved you she'd let you have it. If that fails wait a week and then start askin her repeatedly if you were adopted......that should do it :D

So the basement would sound better?

I would figure that the fact that it is open and unfinished would screw up the sound for recording... but I guess that shows what I know.

The basement has a LOT more room I think, and it would be nice for practicing. My mom and dad would prefer us is in the basement area too, so I guess I'll move my stuff there!

Thanks!

I just talked to my brother about the basement and he says he doesn't think that the sound would be better. He says the basement is too big and open and he says the spot is "stupid". Anyone know anyway to convince him that this is probably the best recording/practicing solution?

I included some more pics of the basement size. Picture 61 is a shot of the bottom of the stairs, if you turn right you see the spot that I want to stick the stuff in (picture 62), and if you turn to the left you see my dad's computer stuff (pictures 64). Picture 65 is a shot facing the stairs, showing you the shelfs on that side of the wall, and picture 67 is a shot from the corner of the spot I want, facing the rest of the basement.

basement. move everything over to a store area near the utilities (not too close) and use the rest - lemontree suggest gobos, thats a good idea if you cannot through some partition walls and insulation up.
