Which ADAT is best?

Hello all,
I have a question regarding ADATs. I've been told they all sound different. Which one sounds the best? I record acoustic instruments mainly (guitar and mandos), also vocals. Assuming a good signal chain...which ADAT sounds the best. I would think the XT-20...I'm looking for experienced opinion(s).

The M20 is the top of the heap as far as tape-based ADATs were concerned, the XT20 would be 2nd best......

I was told by a "famous" name here on the threads that, as he put it "the M-20 was and still is a mistake". I've been thinking about upgrading to a better ADAT and am confused...help
 
The M20 is the production house version - more robust transport, better converters.......

The XT20 is also a very good machine though.....

There are a lot of people who hate adats in general (like me) so I would chalk the mistake comment up to that.
 
I've had experience with XT's and Blacfaces. XT was better than blackface in my opinion. I've never heard the M20.

I vote for the HD24. Though it's not a tape-based adat. It rocks and I love mine. It was worth every penny to me.

Not that it matters much. But I have 4 of the Blackface adats with the brc. I still like the sound that I get from them. I have been using them for over ten years and I would have to say that they have been worth any and every dime that I have invested in them. I have recorded everthing from Up with People to Emerson & Fahey and I have been real happy with the results.

Like 'em or not, the truth is that if one can't get at least a decent outta them, it's not the ADAT that's at fault...!
 
hey sarasin, why dont you upgrade to a hd24? just curious?

Well I figure that being I can import into computer if I need to why change what works? They are paid for and I guess I do not have a good reason why. I am alittle from old school "If it isnt broke why fix it?

I guess when its time to put major money in my setup again I will consider it.
