You simply dismount the actual cans from the headphones and then it's just a matter of proper placement. It should be a 180 degree angel, like straigth through the head and one can on each side. About 20" is a convieniant distance. As all headphones actually are designed for a flat response, the distance you listen to them would not matter as long as it's equal for both ears. You might have to redesign a headphone amp though to handle higher power. But that's no problem with a little know-how. You might be unused to the sound at first, but this is perfectly normal. Many people have had the same experiance first time they listen to real monitors. It's just the flat sound you are unused of. So you just have to learn how your headphone cans translate at distant listening. Play a couple of commercial CDs through them every time you start to mix.
