Where would the 19" format come from ?

Being a metric user 48.26cm doesn't make any sense for me, but would anyone know where/how the 19" format got such a standard ?? Was there any bigsize company that used it alot ??

Anyone ?

GrtZ,
Herwig

It most likely was an 18" standard which is 1/5 feet. Then people realized it would be better to house all this stuff in a nice cabinet, so they added one inch for ears, and there you go. 19"....
Just a theory.

19"

The phone company: you know -- Ma Bell, AT&T -- back when there was only one phone company in the US. Big enough company for you?

Where they came up with 19" I don't know. I guess it was big enough, but not too big.

Lots of apparently arbitrary standards came from the phone company.

I thought it was based on a standard military equipment size...

Like 3.5" Floppy. Whaddayoumean 3.5"? How did that standard appear?

Well, they aren't 3.5" at all. They are 90mm, and it was supposedly decided that this was a good size, because you could fit it into your shirt pocket.

There ya go!
